It seems that if I put the camera in auto mode and turn the flash off, the camera slows down the shutter too much and I get blurry pictures unless I use a tripod. Putting the camera in fast shutter mode (that running guy pic on the wheel) and turning the flash off seems to fix this somewhat, but isn't there some way to get it to work right in auto mode?

thats the way things work. to properly expose the photo with low level of light, you have to leave the shutter open for longer. the other solution is to bump up the ISO... which would help somewhat... other than that there are no ways around it

Up the ISO to 400 and the aperture to 2.8 and things should improve. Remeber to dial the ISO back down when you have sufficient light or are using the flash.
