I'm almost certain the camera can't focus closer than 5.4". Anyway, select the macro focus button (the flower), and use the lens to zoom into your subject from a short distance, rather than position the camera a few inches from your subject. Keep a steady hand, perhaps by using an object in your environment to steady your arms. Gently depress the shutter and once focal lock is achieved, snap the picture!

If you lightly click once, you will hear a noise (I think) and the little orange light on the front will flash (provided you didnt turn it off in the settings). That is autofocus. Now providing you dont move much, you can click again all the way and hold, and take the picture.

Hope that helps a little bit.
