Looks like a great camera. Finally added the built-in wireless flash commander (that Nikon has had in their cameras for about 5 years now)

and minolta had nearly 20 years ago. i'm going to guess the patent expired recently.

And it's better than the current Nikon and Sony's. Unlike Nikon, Sony, and others', it can work as a remote flash commander, rather than master flash unit.

Ordered my 7D last week. 🙂 He's hoping my order will get filled in the first wave. However, they say it may not be until October. 🙁

This is going to be a huge upgrade over my 20D. Plus it will be nice having good quality video built in. I have a camcorder but don't carry it anywhere. It's a hassle to carry and use the DV tapes, and the quality sucks too.

I thought some of the Nikons can work either way, no?

Not sure what you mean, since all the Nikons I've owned can work as remote flash commanders.

Those with a ring-flash unit like Metz 15MS-1 have been complaining how the built-in flash affects the output. In that case, Canon have been the worst because you had to buy an extra flash controller unit. If not, you had nothing to begin with. However, once you buy it, it became the best as it worked flawlessly without affecting the output. Now, 7D offers such functions without the need for a such extra unit. I've read a 7d user reports on this issue and it worked the way I've described.

, with Nikon, the built-in flash affects the output.

CLS lets the commander unit control the slave units without affecting the output of the picture.

What camera did you have? The DV (PC120E) and the HDV camcorders have always outputted great video for their generation. But not having them with you is a m00t point 😛

Koing

I have an SD camcorder (old). The newer HD camcorders are much nicer, but still suffer from poor low light performance as well as stuff like lacking interchangeable lenses and having too much depth of field. The low light performance of the 7D is in a completely different league, and in the right hands (not mine) is good enough for commercial work - music videos, documentaries, indie flicks, etc.

However, the biggest problem for me had little to do with quality. It was just the fact it was a PITA to carry a second camera around. And if I can only take one camera, the still camera always wins. Now I can take both. 🙂

P.S. One cool thing about the 7D is the video is already captured as QuickTime compatible H.264 .mov files. With DV you have to capture it, and with other formats you often have to convert it. I'm soooooo glad the files aren't AVCHD or HDV or Motion JPEG AVI or whatever.

BTW, with regards to both AVCHD cams and HDV cams, the 7D's bit rate is way higher. AVCHD camcorders IIRC are around 24 Mbps H.264, whereas the 7D is twice that at around 48 Mbps H.264. That's actually higher than Blu-ray. As for HDV, I believe it's 25 Mbps, but only using MPEG2.
