Hi all,

Just bought a Canon 350D. It was a package deal for a good price.

I am not big into photography. I have a nice Sony 6 mp point and shoot, but I have been wanting to get a better camera (SLR) for a while as the point and shoot is just not fast enough to catch the movements of my little 3 year old daughter.

So I saw this special and bought the camera. However, all the pictures I take look like they are too dark, or from what I can make out (from camera reviews and the like), look as if they where shot too fast. You know, using an ISO 1600 when only an ISO 100 is necessary / applicable / whatever.

I have taken shots outside, even pointing it to a light.

The histogram that you can display for each picture all show the graph to the left. In the manual it says that this is 'A Dark Image' - pg 108. Definetly not normal.

I decided to ask here before I take the camera back and do whatever. Am I missing a setting? Should it not work out of the box? Is it broken?

Any assistance will help please.

Metering may be broken on your camera, but we still don't have lots of details. What sort of mode are you using to shoot these shots? Go outside, put it in Av mode, and shoot the same scene using different EC settings. If the shots all turn out dark and roughly the same, your camera's definitely broken. Is it under warranty?

Actually, it's the opposite of what you said. If the ISO was set at 1600 when it's supposed to be 100, you'll probably get bright/blown out images due to the 1/4000 of shutter speed not handling it(well, if you took the picture where there's plenty of light)

Anyway, why don't you just upload a picture that has EXIF data intact so we can take a look at it?

Thanks guys, will do as you suggest. Will let you know later today. I bought the camera on Friday, so I hope it is still under guarantee if it is broken. Very upsetting then.

Till later.

have you tried any shots in auto mode? maybe you're set to aperture or shutter priority and there's not enough light to make up the difference?

Will try, but to answer ObiDon, first lot of pics where on full auto - not a pro - and then I tried to fiddle around with the other setting. No change.

Are you watching the matchneedle in the viewfinder? Have you read the manual on how to expose properly?

Hi all,

Just an update and thanks. I managed to exchange my 350D yesterday and the new camera works perfectly - as expected. Pictures are stunning. Just in time for my weekend visit with the little one.

It is so much easier (and quicker!!!) to take the snaps compared to my point and click.

Thanks for the comments.
