Cannot view other PC on the network or shared folders...

I noticed this today when using my bro's PC. Usually when we open "My Network Places" in Windows XP, it will show all the shared folders throughout the network and show the "Network Wizard, Add Network Place, & Entire Network" buttons/icons.

Now on his PC, we cannot see any of the shared folders on the network, any of the 4 computers on the network. I do have File/Print Sharing enabled and he is able to still surf the internet with our DSL router. The other PCs can view the shared folders, but his won't view them anymore.

He is using:

AthlonXP 1500+
Iwill KK26 v1.2
256MB Hynix PC133
Geforce2 MX
Realtek 10baseT NIC
Windows XP Professional w/ file/print sharing enabled

I made sure his domain/workgroup was the same as all the other computers and it is. But I did notice under the "Computer" tab in the system control panel that the options in the CHANGE tab are grayed out, so I cannot change the workgroup or domain. Also the Network ID button is grayed. What could be wrong?

try viewing those other computers using IP addresses instead of winexplorer or network places. Type in their IP address and the folder/share name. I assume he can ping the other computers? Is the network on a router using DHCP?

<< can you view the other shares by using their IP addresses like i described above? >>

I can only ping them from the problem computer. I cannot use their IP to log onto the other computers' shared folders/files. I tried doing the help & Support within WinXP, but it doesn't seem to help. I also tried redoing the Networking Wizrd, but that didn't help either. Is there anyway to fix this before I go through the hell of doing a clean install?

do you have any firewall installed? either the XP one or something like zone alarm?
If yes, then( for ZA) you have to add the adpater to your "trusted" network. It is in advanced security.

My Linksys 4-port DSL router has builtin firewall, and no zonealarm, or any other software firewall. I have never encountered this problem with the computer before even after firmware updates for the router. And XP's firewall is NOT enabled.

Have you changed your log on name, it almost sounds like you lost your admin rights...check your rights and policies to make sure you've got the right to make changes..

I do remember changing my bro's log on name on his PC. He still has admin rights even though I changed the log on name. I tried to log on as admin trhough safe mode, but I could not make any changes either. Would reinstalling WinXP fix this?

Have you tried adding the other comps (users) to your xp machine? I had a small network where I had to add the other user to the xp machine for it to "see" the 2nd comp (mixed os's, 98 and xp).

*edit* though it still feels like a log on problem. Make sure your brother is the admin with full rights, double check your rights and policies for the rights to make network changes. Sounds like when you did a name change it didn't give him full admin rights.

You could try searching for the other computers on the network using the Start/Search function. I have had the same problem in Win2K but even when it is present I can access the computers if I search for their computer names.

I tried what you mentioned, but it cannot find the other PC's.

Does the new login id have "Client for Microsoft Networks" enabled? That could be what is preventing you from changing workgroups and also from seeing other computers on the network.

I do not know what happened now, but the computer keeps giving this error after start up:

STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error)
0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
System has been shutdown

That's most of what the error says, it did mention something about "log on" and I do not know how to fix it. It does the same error when going into Safe MOde too.

When you get it back stable, check tcp/ip properties advance tab and enable netbios over tcp/ip. I think thats in the wins tab. I had the same problem, and checked that tab, and WHAALLA!! I can see my network again.I am a happy camper.

It is not set up that way by default. Try it and let us know how your doing.

Good Luck🙂

Since I got the BSOD everytime at boot up due to some messed up log on setting, I did a clean install, and everything is fine. I appreciate all your guys' help on my situation though...
