Cannot upload photos

I recently bought my wife a Nikon D3100 with a 64g sandisk SDHC card. She is having issues being able to upload the pictures onto the computer. Everytime she tries, it will say that the card is not formatted and if she would like to format now. I bought a new card reader that was made for SDHC cards but it is still saying the same thing. Any ideas what I can do? Ive read around and cant figure out what to do. She really doesnt want to lose her nearly 400 pictures.
 
Can she view them *in the camera* ?

If she can, then you can use the camera as the transfer device.

Your camera came with a cable to plug it into the computer - use that and you should be able to copy the photos.

Once that's done, get a different memory card. Take a few test photos, and verify the different memory card works ok.
