Cannot read SATA drive in My Computer

I just installed a Maxtor 300gb SATA hard drive but the drive will not show up in My Computer. There is, however, an icon at the bottom right of the screen to "safely remove hardware", the hardware being my hard drive. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Have you tried this:

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management and then format the drive in question.

Nothing there either? That's strange.

What model is your motherboard? You may need to flip on some BIOS settings or install a driver.

I have a Gigabyte GA K8NNXP-SLI nforce4 ultra. I checked the BIOS settings and everything seems to be enabled.
