Just switched from an 8800GT to a HD 5850.
I put in the HD 5850, plug both PCI-E power connectors in, place the card in firmly. All I get is a flashing power light and no video. Reseated the card multiple times, same thing. Doesn't seem like it is posting either.

Specs are as follows
AMD 5600+
Biostar Tforce4 AM2 ( http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdetails.asp?model=TForce4 AM2 )
2x2gb G-Skill DDR2 800
Enermax Liberty 500W Modular
Would this be an issue with PCI-E 2.0 compatibility? Everything ive read indicates the 5850 is fine for power with my setup.

The PSU does indeed look adequate.

Try to use that card on another PC - friends PC, some hardware store.

Try to change the power connectors of your pc - preferably make sure the PSU cord that is connected to your 5850 isn't connected to any other device.

Since you can't POST seems bad card - quite a pity so few 5870/5850 around and your is possibly FUBARed.

PCIE 1.0 or 2.0 should all be good.

RMA it if above fails/can't be tested.

You should update you bios on your motherboard. That's usually the case when dealing with new hardware.

It seems biostar has shitty bios support although it is an ancient board. It's no wonder I stick with Asus when it comes to motherboards.

Yeah I don't see any bios updates that are even close to being recent. Im going to try tomorrow with the i5 build, but im getting a gut feeling i got a defective card. Who knows.

the power connectors to your video card should not be connected to any other device simultaneously. however, your power supply maybe be inadequate considering the minimum power requirements for that card are a 500w psu with 2 75w 6pin pci power connectors. your psu is the minimum for the card, but you still have to run the mobo, hdd's and other devices off of that one PSU.

suggestion:buy 750w psu or higher.

Most reviews ive read says the 5850 uses more or less the same amount as my 8800GT, you really think thats the issue?

I'll order one, but i've read tons of people using a good 500w with one.

This is silly advice. Video card hardware requirements, especially for PSUs, are liberal estimates that already take other components into consideration. No video card is going to consume 500W by itself. His PSU should be fine.

This is what I was kind of thinking...Regardless, I sent for a 750W Corsair power supply by air. Kind of hurt my wallet more, but whatever, I'm not going to be a happy camper if I need to wait for another 5850 if its the video card.

You are also going to be held back by that processor with a 5850.

Well, if you're willing to shell out, it can only help your troubleshooting to have a new PSU. Your current supply very well could be causing the issue, but specs-wise, I would assume it's perfectly acceptable.

So I tried it with my new i5 system

i5 750
Gigabyte P55-UD3R
G-Skill 4GB DDR3

8800GT works fine, no video with the HD 5850. So waiting on PSU on Monday, if that don't work..then RMA it is.

Oddly enough, it must have been my power supply. Tried the 750W Corsair and the computer started up.

Going to do some benches soon.

Glad you narrowed it down. Maybe it truly was insufficient wattage, but you should definitely do some tests to see if the PSU is faulty.

hm....this does not bode well for my build when I eventually get a 5850 as well. I'm running an Antec 500w modular myself haha.

Core i7 860 / Biostar T5 XE combo / soon to be G.Skill 4gb DDR3 as well

I'm having the exact same problem with my new XFX HD-585X-ZNFC. Installed it with my new motherboard (GIGABYTE 870A-UD3), new memory (G.SKILL ECO F3-12800CL7D-4GBEC0), new Phenom II x4 955. Power supply is a Corsair HX620W.

Everything works fine if I use my old Geforce 9600GT. Put in the new XFX 5850 and no video output. All the fans come on at full speed, but no post beep. I do have both 6pin power, dedicated straight from PSU to card, plugged in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Test your PSU with a multimeter.
