It kept saying "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." Well I did "bootsect /nt60 all" and that allowed that message to go away. However upon rebooting during the Win 7 install, my computer doesn't see that drive as a bootable and if I leave the Win 7 disk in it goes to reinstall it again. Now it gives the same cannot be installed to this disk message again, but it doesn't show the partition I created and installed it on just a few minutes ago. It only shows the remaining unpartitioned space? I assume the mbr is messed up, but how can I fix it?

I get "Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space. Error: 0x8004005" when I try to create partitino the part of the hd that it actually sees. I have also used mbrtool from the ubcd to zero out track 0 and the mbr, and I still get the same error.

Well that errored out because it said it had bad sectors. It had passed the short test part from seagate tools from ubcd. So, I go to do the long test and now the drive is securtiy locked and fails both tests right away. How do I fix this? It is just not my day/night.

Where did the disk come from? Do you know it's good?
Where is the "security locked" message coming from? Seatools?

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/66633/

"Okay I checked 2 other computers with SeaTools and in both the other PC's it displayed the information that the drive is Security Freeze locked. And both are running fine and no boot problem. So i am sure that this is NOT the problem preventing the boot. Security freeze lock is a preventive feature which guards your hard disk against someone locking your disk with password. Hence the problem I am facing has nothing to do with Security Freeze Lock. It has to be something else. That's my interpretation."

Look at this post for what happend.

Anyway the drive had passed the short test in Seagates tools a few days ago with no errors. I used a data recovery program to get my data off and then started to install win 7 and that is where this thread starts. I have not noticed the security setting before and my understanding is that it stops all read and writes to the drive which I would think would cause the tests to fail. I think the reason win 7 won't install is because there is something somewhere relating to os or partition info that win 7 is having problems with. Thus the reason I was trying to zero the drive.

As cheap as drive are these days I would just get a new one.... I don't take risk with my data. It is obvious that the drive is having issues.

If I get a new drive I don't need a monster size drive, just something fast. The WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar Black WD5001AALS looks nice. It is pretty much the same as the WD1001FALS which seems to get great reviews. Pretty much twice as fast, transfer speed wise, as my Seagate. Any other recommendation on fixing my current drive or which drive to buy?

Does anyone know where I can find the WD5001AALS in stock? It seems to be sold out at newegg and zipzoomfly. Would I notice much difference between that drive and the WD5000AAKS?
