Friends, cannot install Visual Studio 6 on Windows XP, not even on safe mode, I found a bug reported by Microsoft:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q192731
BUG: Hang or Application Error in Setup (VS60wiz.exe)

Status: Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article
(to be short all Visual Studio 6.0 components)

The resolutions proposed by Microsoft did not work !!!

Any Idea ?

Thanks Gustavo.-:(

Yes, I did try running the setup as a windows 95 application (the lowest level, should I try 98 ?) and even in safe mode.

Just in case is worthwhile The Microsoft Article link is here

Thanks Gustavo.-

gust, I had VS6 on my PC here at work running Win 2000. About 2 months ago, I upgraded to XP. Everything seemed to work fine until last week. IntraDev started blowing up on me.... Kept loosing tons of work, so...

I decided to uninstall VS6 and try to re-install it. Well, after I uninstalled it, I couldn't re-install it. Keft blowing up as soon as I started Setup.exe.

So, I reformatted my drive last night and did a "fresh" install of XP. I've been installing programs all morning. Everything seems to be working fine. VS6 installed without a hitch this time. I'm hoping it will stay this way this time. Next time it blows up, it's back to W2000 :(

I hate to say it yo you, but you may have to do a fresh install to get it to work. I hope not, as you know how much a pain it is.

Good luck.

Things like this are why I bought Win2000 SP2 and not XP, and that was before XP had a service pack. I guess they still haven't gotten it right.

Hrm....maybe they want you to buy .NET version?

Edit: It works fine with Windows 2000 Professional

Good thing I don?t have XP.
Try backing up your registry & then uninstall Visual Studio before removing all registry keys that link to it.

That is another reason that I?m so tempted to try Java/JSP.

Guys, the article says it was first Published: Sep 15 1998 10:30AM (quite before XP were born) so it seems is a Visual Studio 6.0 bug.

Nowhere in the article it is mentioned XP, just 'One possible cause is an exception triggered by a performance counter DLL' what does imply is at least an NT/2000 issue. (even though using 2000 it worked flawlessly)

And thank you for your comments, but still look for any solution, I mean to make it work not to criticize XP.

I have been using Ulead Video Studio 6 with XP for about two months now without any problems. I even managed to burn a VCD without a hitch, so it is not a compatibility problem. I have also installed SP1 so I am completely up to date with XP.

It's been a few days now since I've formatted and reinstalled XP... InterDev and VB are running like a champ.

One thing to note. Power Builder v. 6.5 has issues with WinXP... If you must use this tool (and unfortunately I have to), beware... it causes a few minor issues.

As long as it doesn't blow up on me, I can live with this. :D

There are many newsgroups devoted to one or another component of VS 6. I'm pretty sure that if you post (or cross post!) in those newsgroups you will get a lot of pretty expert guidance in this problem. Good luck.

One thing that's a good thing to try is to go to Google Groups and conduct a search. The searches can be advanced and you can specify a group if you want. Great site. Here are some sample newsgroups you can search and/or post to:

microsoft.public.fox.programmer.exchange
microsoft.public.fox.vfp.oop
microsoft.public.fox.vfp.web
alt.comp.lang.visualbasic
microsoft.public.certification.visualstudio
microsoft.public.vstudio.development
microsoft.public.vstudio.general
microsoft.public.vstudio.setup

Edit: I encourage anyone who is not into Internet Newsgroups (known as Usenet) to investigate. It's a huge part of the online arena. There are probably over 30,000 newsgroups, many of which are sure to be of interest to anyone. In a lot of ways it's similar to these forums but the scope is a lot greater, extending beyond the technical. Each newsgroup has it's own specific focus, as the names above suggest. Those are just a few that deal with Visual Studio topics.
