Cannot install ATI drivers

Whenever I try to install ATI drivers (chipset or vid card) on my new comp, it restarts. Here's the specs:

Windows XP Pro SP1
AMD Athlon X2 4000+ (AM2)
MSI K9A Platinum
2x1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800
HIS Radeon X1900XT IceQ3

I ran Memtest, no errors. Gonna upgrade to SP2 whenever it's done downloading, and then I'll try installing drivers again.

According to ATI's support, I should see a box like:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/.../parature/support/images/radeon_03.jpg
But, instead I get a full-sized window with a very red image that says 'ATI Software', then my comp reboots.

Any suggestions?

Where are you getting the drivers from? The ones from Guru3D worked great for me.

I tried the ATI System Drivers from MSI (for the chipsets), the drivers on the HIS Driver CD, and Catalyst 6.6 from ATI's site. All of them produced the same rebooting effect.

Yeah, installed .Net. And it's a completely fresh system, so there weren't any previous drivers.

My computer had that problem with my Sound Card (X-fi). The fix was removing the x-fi and replacing it with an old audigy. Maby your video card is bad?
But the fact that this also happens when you try to install the chipset drivers kinda disproves that theory.

Install SP2 first before you do ANYTHING else. Then get all those critical updates.
Then is the time to install some drivers.
Anyway give these a shot too:

But I think you should try to install the chipset drivers first.

Well I have an Audigy4 in there right now. If it still gives problems after SP2 then I'll take it out.

Un-install your current Catalyst, I assume that's Cat 6.8 that you've tried ?

If that's the case, then try the Catalyst 6.7, or even 6.6 instead.

A lot of users (using ATi cards, especially X1K ones) are experiencing issues with Cat 6.8. It's NOT everyone, mind you, in fact, it's a minority, but, yes, for some reasons, Catalyst 6.8 might be the problem (it is, for me, in games mostly though). So it can't hurt anything to try a previous Cat version. I highly suggest 6.7 and 6.3.

Hope it helps.

Hmm, well I tried 6.6 and 6.8, both refuse to install the drivers at all.

Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

Have you applied the latest dual-core hotfixes from AMD and Microsoft?

Also I believe you must have SP2 installed for ATi's drivers.

Well, I installed SP2 and the AMD Dual-core hotfix. Still wouldn't install.

Then, randomly, Windows recognized the display adapters and installed drivers from the driver CD. I have Radeon X1900 Series and Radeon X1900 Series Secondary in Device Manager.

Catalyst still won't install. I tried 6.8, 6.6, and 5.8. All of them restart, except for 5.8 which complains about a missing driver.

Any thoughts?

These may have been covered before, but if you're coming from a clean build, I'd back out and start over. You're on AM2, so I'm not sure if there are drastic differences in a S939 build.

- Build system with only vid card installed (no other PCI cards, USB devices, etc.)
- Initialize your BIOS settings (I'd disable onboard sound, if you're going to be dropping in the Audigy later) - disable anything you're not going to use
- Format HD and install Win XP, then SP2 (before anything else)
- Don't install Firewall/AntiVirus software yet until basic system is running.
- Check BIOS. If there's newer BIOSes, but nothing addressing your current problem - I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, update (DOS preferable, but WinFlash alternative if you prefer).
- Update Windows (Critical Updates only) - I think the dual core hotfix has been pushed to end users, but if not, download and install it. I also think .net 2.0 will be on of your options here as well
- Download latest chipset drivers and install (cross your fingers!)
- Check Win System and see what devices aren't recognized by XP
- Install other drivers (or download) from MSI
- Install Catalyst drivers (cross your fingers!)

You can then enable things in BIOS as you need them, drop in that Audigy, etc. I'm on Cat 6.7, since reading the release notes for 6.8 didn't address anything (why fix if not broke?). I know there's supposed to be a small performance boost, but this X1900XT right now is plenty power.

The only other thing I can think of other than that would be to slipstream SP2 into your orig XP disk.

Once you get it up and running, you're gonna love that Ice3Q cooler - looks like ATI got smart and adopted it for their X1950 line. :)

Good luck!

Hmm, well the chipset drivers didn't install nicely either. It's an ATI chipset, and like the video card drivers, installing caused a reboot. Eventually I got them installed via Devide Manager, I think it grabbed them from the driver CD, but I'm not sure.
