cannot install any drive, cd or virtual

all of a sudden I noticed an error in Device Manager/hardware for my cdrom and my virtual drive (alcohol 120). I could not "update drivers" and reinstalling Alcohol 120 and also trying daemon tools did not work. I'm at a loss here. It used to work. Is there some windows setting that I may have inadvertently changed that would have screwed up drive access?
