Hello All, Perhaps this may bring back memories or someone may have an idea or two. I have tried many many times to install 2000 all without success! My current system is a 1.2 TBird on a A7V133 rev 1.04 Bios version 1006.
I start to install the os and all looks well and normal. It goes along perfectly untill it comes to the portion where it says" Now detecting devices such as Keyboard, mouse etc". At this portion of the install there is a progress bar that moves along as it is detecting the devices.
When tis progress bar gets aprox 3/4 of the way completed the screen goes all black and is covered in what appears as backwards coma's???and it just hangs there!
I have tried the install as a upgrade, tried it fresh, tried removing all cards except the video card and still no luck! The real kicker is my prior system was a Athlon 700 on a Epox board and it did the exact thing! Any ideas? Have you ever seen this before? Your opinions would really be appreciated.

What kind of video card are you using?

I've run into the same thing when using my ATI Xpert 2000. It's a 32mb card, but useless when it comes to the install. Hell, I've got an old 8mb video card that works with 2k. Try swapping out the video card, see if that works.

Although I would like to know what this particular problem is all about. It would be nice to be able to use that card again...

Yes, my new build does use my old hdd'd. flippenfleck, you bring up a very good point! YES, my vid card is a ATI 2000, 32 mb. I was leaning towards the video card being a possibility as the problem. I will pick up a pci card and try it again I guess.

I got an ATI Xpert 2000 Video card with 32MB of ram. It works fine for me. Maybe its the cd. Can't rule that out.

There is as known issue with older ATI cards during W2K install. I keep a matrox pci card around for such occasions. Once you get W2k installed theres not a problem anymore and you can replace with your ATI card. There is a fix but it easier for me to just swap cards.

Enigma, Do you know what the fix is or a link to it? I would rather not have to pick up another card id I dont have to.

This might be good for you.

I've got a Rage Fury card and pretty much the same system -

Take vid card out of machine - I had a lot of problems with this vid card.
Install - put vid card back in = DON'T install drivers for it from the CD - Go to the ATI website and download the latest drivers (this was the only fix for my poota.)
First - install VIA 4in1 if your board takes it - Instal the latest version - just do a search for it.
Second - install Directx8 or 8.1
Now install drivers for vidcard.

Good luck

Actually, at this point in time the CD can be ruled out. What where I tried three different 2K CD's (one original and two burns, all pro full version) and kgdb ovbiously isn't using my CD's.

Bad drivers on the install CD would be the culprit here. But it's not too much of a hassle to install an older card and then re-install the Xpert-2k.

Oh well, another reason I like my gforce better!

Also, try disabling USB in the BIOS prior to installation - I got up to the 3rd setup disk when my Win2K installation stalled/crashed.

Are you use a highpoint/promise controller to connect the hard drives or the default IDE controller?

*UPDATE*

Ok, I managed to get 2K up and running! I installed a cheapy video card just to get the install complete and once done I put my ATI card back in. It still went goofy when it tried to detect the ATI so I went into safe mode and ran the ATI 2K software from there and away it went!
