Trying to do a clean install on a new rig. Windows goes through all the preliminary driver loading etc. but as soon as it get's to the point where it says something like 'starting windows' the computer shuts down completely. I also tried a w2k install and just as it finishes the last of the 4 boot disks the same thing happens at basically the same stage of the setup procedure thus i suspect a hardware problem. Here is my system:

Asus P4S533 (updated to 1009 bios)
P4 2.5 (400)
512 mb Samsung pc2700
WD 80gb SE
Radeon 8500dv 64mb
Toshiba DvD player and acer burner (can't remember exact models)
Antec 400 watt smartpower (or whatever they were called before the latest truepower units came out)

To reiterate, everything seems to be powering up just fine and I can access the bios without a hitch. Problem happens at same point each time i try. I'm thinking about switching out the ram to see if that makes a difference. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

thanks

i'm thinking ram or vid card....removed the burner but i don't see how i can minimize hardware any further.....maybe disable onboard sound and lan
