Cannot get video over Firewire connection, but can control camera

I'm posting this after a solid 5 hours of fiddling with this thing. :|

I borrowed a friend's Panasonic DV cam. It has a standard small 4-pin FW connection output and a USB output. I tried the USB, but the camera wasn't detected properly and the video quality was very bad.

My motherboard (Gigabyte DS3) doesn't have FW on board, so I purchased a cheapie (S-Link brand) FW card. It has a Via VT6306 chipset. It came with no driver CD; I later found out that there are no drivers available from Via b/c the chipset is OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394, blah, blah. Windows detected the card and loaded a standard Microsoft Driver (5.1.2535.0 7/1/2001) Device Manager says the card is working fine.

In both NeroVisionExpress and MS Movie Maker, I can control the camera (stop/play/ff/rw) but there is no video or sound. I can press "start capture" but it just grabs a blank file.

There is video on the tape! It plays back thru the SVideo/composite video out just fine.

I've tried everything I can think of. Restarted, uninstalled/reinstalled the FW card, turn cam off, open Nero, then turn cam on, reverse procedure, etc.

I Googled and this seems to be a known problem with Via chipset FW cards; with no solution.

What's going on? What am I doing wrong? Is my card a POS? Can you recommend me one that will definitely work?

Thanks.

I got really hopeful when I found this article. It really looked promising. I followed the steps verbatim and the two files that were allegedly the culprit were rolled back. But it didn't help. :(

This freaking RIDICULOUS! :| I've got THREE programs that can capture video; NeroVisionExpress, ULead Studio 8 and MS Movie Maker and none of them work!

Unfreakingbelievable.

Can someone please help?

Too hard basket!!..

Do you see the DV device in the control panel under scaners and camera?, explorer?, what happened when you double click the icon?

Whats the story with the VIA driver?

free bump!

Yep, I can see the scanner. If I double click it, I get a "Your device has passed the Windows test" or some oddball message like that.

If you Google on "OHCI compliant 1394 driver" you'll get lots of links talking about probs with Via chipset FW cards.

I'm going to mess with it some more later today; I'm sure I won't get anywhere. I'll just have to pay someone to rip the video from the tape and throw it on a DVD so I can edit it. What a waste of money. :(

Also I think that with the DS4 they are using Texas Instruments based chip not Via. So maybe we have another problem?

Yes I know!

The problem seems to be the same on the two Gigabyte MB GA965P-DS3 and DS4 (even though the DS4 has an onbord firewire). It might be something with the chip set of the MB ?

I have posted a question to the Gigabyte Tech Support but until now got no reply :-(

From other threads, I think he has it working now.

Do you have a DV camera or a HDV camera?

A plain DV camera Sony. It works great on my old computer P4 ASUS MB with a BELKIN Firewire card.
