Cannot get Sprint service without a contract?

Just bought a Palm Pre off Ebay and try to setup service and the Sprint rep tells me I need to sign a 2 year contract even though I bought the phone myself. That's ridiculous. I always thought the contract covered them for selling the phone to you at a discount.

No Palm Pre for me :(

I don't think any cell provider except T-Mobile has any non contracts shit any more, except for the pre-paid phones.

I want to get a Palm Pre, too, but not if Sprint locks you into their crap for 2 years.

Verizon usually has a price for phones with no contract. So they sell you the phone and then dont give you service?

Can't you just go onto the Sprint website and enable the phone with the ESM number or whatever it is (normally near where the battery is)? My friend switches between phones by doing that all the time.

I had Verizon for years, the full price was for people who wanted a new phone but weren't up for the 2 year discount. I ended up buying 2 full priced phones even though I was in a contract.

He doesn't have a Sprint account, and they won't let him sign up for anything without a contract.

So now they're turning down customers?!? ROFL! So glad I ditched those clowns for Verizon. How much longer can they hang on?

Oh, woops, misread it. I was under the assumption he was already with Sprint but just out of contract.

I've had Sprint for a long time now and I'm not sure if you can buy a phone and then just get a plan without a contract. Then again I've never really looked into it, SERO FTW!

Verizon won't let people buy a phone and sign up without a contract either, you should run away from Verizon as fast as you can.

Does the Pre work on Verizon? I'm on sprint now but I remember right before I left Verizon said it was "opening up it's network" and by that - allowing non verizon CDMA phones to run on their network. I know some people were trying to use some sprint only phones (like the LG Rumor which at the time (still is?) Sprint only) . Could that work?

that's pretty damn stupid right there. you'd think the fact that they'd be happy to have new customers.

Well, I can say for a fact that AT&T will give you service without a contract. That's what I currently have with my Quicksilver USB aircard I bought cash - from AT&T, and as long as you have a credit card to bill to, no contract was required.

I have phone service through Alltel (soon Verizon) and was not required to sign a contract. I did have to pay a $35 activation fee, but it's well worth the peace of mind that I'm not stuck with the same service for 24 months.

Now I just need Verizon to get some decent phones!! I think they're getting the Pre in early '10, but I want something now :(
