Wanted to revisit this game but I can't seem to get it working on OpenGL mode. When I run it, it defaults to software mode, so I switch to Default OpenGL and the screen goes grey for a few seconds then I get an error with the file nvoglnt.dll which isthe nvidia OpenGL ICD file. I tried temporarily renaming that file, and then when I switch to OpenGL it doesn't give me an error but it won't switch and just dumps me back to software mode. I tried the obvious fixes...installing 3.20 patch, deleting config.cfg, running in Win98 compatibility mode, and I have the latest drivers for my video card.

Any suggestions?

Of course old GLQuake will run without a hitch but not Quake2

Kami,
It sounds like a driver problem(from what little experience I have). I can only think of a couple of things that you might try. Have you tried removing the game and reinstalling it? Also, have you tried an older video driver? I know that sometimes the newer video drivers fix things in newer games and occasionally they "break" things in older games. I'm hoping that's not the case. I'm sure that I'm telling you things that you most certainly already know but those are the only two things that I can think of that might help you. Since the nvoglnt.dll file doesn't seem to work right....that makes me think that it's definitely a driver issue. Do you have any problem with OpenGL on any of your other games? Once again, not trying to insult you....it's just that what I posted was all I can think of at the time. Sorry!

It could be a problem with that nVidia driver you're using; try a different one.

is there an opengl32.dll in the quake2 dir? try renaming it or get rid of it if it exists.
