Cannot find hardware Key

I am using a program for ids but when I print it it tells me cannot find hardware key and shuts the program down. any suggestions?
 
Hi, sounds a bit vague, can you be more specific, what program? what is your computer spec? what do you do to cause the error exactly? With a bit more info you'll probably get more of a response.

It is an identatronics sofware that makes id badges for employees. When I try to send the picture to the printer it says "hardware key cannot be found" and then completly shuts the program down. Its on a windows 98 machine. Ive re-installed the sofware and made sure that it was on the correct printer and re-installed the printer drivers as well.
 
A hardware key is a copy protection method. It is usually a small device that is plugged into a serial port. Usually, a program will be crippled unless the device is plugged in.

All the dongles I've seen plug into the parallel port.

I have seen them bypassed using a Windows virtual port, though I have no idea how to do it.
 
This is common type of copy protection for commercial software.
Usually hardware key connects to the parallel port and printer connects to it.
 
I am not a pirate. We switched from a digital camera to a usb camera. It is probably looking for the camera that was plugged in. what do you think?

That would be cool. We're in need of some more Microstation keys at work, but corporate doesn't want to spend the cash. If I could figure this out, maybe I could get a bonus.
