Cannot disable "My Menu"

I'd like to be able to remove the "My Menu" sidebar, since it interferes when resizing fonts in web browsers.

so, I went to modify my profile and set "enable sidebar menu" to "off", click "Update Profile" and the setting does not stick, when the page refreshes the option is still set to "on" the "My Menu" is still present.

Is this by design or is it a fault? I would like to turn the sidebar off please.
 
I think they said that option (despite there being a place to change it) isn't available to us. Unfortunately the archive search is not working so I can't find the thread. 🙁 Maybe someone else knows for sure and can point you to the thread with the information. Good luck!
 
That's what I'm thinking actually.

Why can't they make the damn things go across the top of the screen where it wouldn't get in your way? or the right hand side instead of the left?

Even if they moved the menu bar, you'll still have the gap on the left because there is ad placement there.
