Cannot DELETE XP JUNK

In trying to 'clean-up' XP to make run faster, I've turned off all the 'animated' stuff and returned to 'Classic Windows' desktop. XP however will NOT let me delete certain folders such as 'Movie Maker' and 'Messenger' - says '....is in use by system or user'. Is there a way to go in and delete this stuff safely? Radioguyps:frown:
