Cannot connect to internet through router [modem is ok]

Hi people

I have windows 7 with Microsoft Security Essentials...

One time I booted on my computer, it showed i had one of those fake AntiVirus programs installed. Almost immediately Microsoft Security Essentials picked it up and removed it, so it was no longer visible in the taskbar and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner. Since then Ive installed Malwarebytes which picked up RogueAntivirusSuite and TrojanFraudpack from my registry. However since then, I havent been able to browse with my router. AIM is the only program that seems to connect fine, and the network detects internet access but when I try to load anything through internet explorer it acts as though it's not connected.

However, when i plug directly into the modem and sign into my DSL through PPPOE it works perfectly fine. Any ideas how to fix this problem?

There's a common belief in the security industry that once you're computer has had malware or a trojan on it, you should probably do a backup of your data and then a complete reformat. I think what might have happened was the keys that were part of the malware modified your registry to delete something essential from your network settings if deleted and thus hosed the machine. Unless you want to mess with it for hour on end, you're better off with a flush and fill.
