First, let me thank all of you who offered words of wisdom while trying to help solve the mystery of why mt W2K install (the second in a dual boot with '98) was resetting (at the reboot) every hardware or registry change I made.
The cause was very weird. When the shop upgraded my computer frmo the old 100mhz FSB P-III 500 to a 8oomhz Coppermine (the fastest I could get in a slot1, ug!), they flashed the BIOS with the latest from the manufacturer. It seems that this flash, unknown to the producer, had incompatibilities with the HAL, and maybe other systems. This may only apply to W2K in the second partition, but never tried it any other way.
As soon as I flashed it with the previous program, and reinstalled, everything works properly again. After a low level format, several fdisk/MBRs, and a dozen re-installs with no change, it is wonderfull to see things work again.
Oh, and I made the problem very, very clear to the manufacturer
Thanks again to all for the help!

thats why its good to find out exactly what the shop did with your hardware while it was there..
