Cannot burn DVD-r +R discs

Hey all,

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out why I can't seem to burn DVD +R discs on my system.

I can do RW and -R fine, without fail, but as soon as I try with a +R disc, it fails everytime.

I am running a LG dual-layer DVD burner and using the latest version of Nero.

Has anyone had this issues before, can anyone offer tips on how to resolve this troublesome issue? I'm getting tired of having coasters on my desk.

PEACE

before anything I'm just making sure your burner is +/- RW... If its just a - RW, then yeah you can burn - and not +.. but also. if it is both. What speed disc are you burning with? if your trying to burn a 4x +r disc at 8x you might have trouble there too.. Try slowing it down and seeing it that works.

Assuming your drive is indeed dual format:

Try serveral different brands of +R media.
Try burning at the slowest speed as was mentioned.
Get the latest firmware if you don't have it.

If all these fail, throw LG drive out the window & buy BenQ DW1640 or 1650, & enjoy 😉

uninstall and reinstall nero

side note: theres a benq 1650???

Yeah, just came out.

Good point on reinstalling Nero.

Actually, try burning with another program or two also.

why bother? if you can burn with -r then stick to that.
also, you can burn with dvd decrypter too. thats what i use. it's freeware

Thanks for all the input.

I have some leftovers from someone, and just wanted to use them up, but instead, I am getting coasters. Kind of a waste.

Normally, I use -R, I just wanted to use up those that I already had.

I will follow-up once I try a couple things out.

My guess is that teh media you are using is crap.

Poor media = lots of coasters.

As a general reference for media:

Made in China (MIC) = pure crap
Made in Taiwan (MIT) = poor to good - it varies
Made in Japan (MIJ) - excellent

Taiyo Yuden is generally regarded to make the best quality media out there.

yeah, its your media, drive firmware has no burn routine for it.

Hmm, i'm no techinical guru, but why then does using different firmware "fix" issues with certain types of media, etc?

Every DVD burner goes into a quick test routine to see the best way to burn media
Every media has a readable PID
You can burn CAV... partial CAV...... CLV ....... Zone CLV etc., and you can overburn and overspeed.
See the various routines ("write strategies") here:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/240/2
If a burner has no "history" on a certain type media, it either burns too slow or not at all
So if a new media brand comes out - like the 16X Taiyo Yuden -R, then a new firmware must be coded to
include this media.
Thats why many reviews of DVd burners say media compatibility is poor with XX media, but may be improvd with FW update.

Edit:
CAV = Constant angular velocity
PCAV = partial CAV
CLV = constant Lin Velocity
