Windows XP x86, SP3
A computer on our network can access the homepage, MSN, just fine. However if I try to use the bing search from there, it does not do anything. Going to google.com also does nothing, it just wants to stay on Msn.com.
I decided to reinstall windows using the repair option. This reverted it to IE7 which then returned the error : "The requested look up key was not found in any active activation context"
Googling this issue advised to perform ipconfig/flushdns as well as reinstall IE7 (old post) so I used an executable from a networked drive to just fully install IE8; I was brought back to square one.
I performed a "repair" on the network adapter, uninstalled the antivirus, McAfee and then shut off all start up items and then performed a reset under advanced settings for IE8, restarted, no success. I even stopped the Windows firewall just to see if I can get to google without seemingly being blocked and without error.
I cannot figure out what is blocking the browser from going to any website whatsoever. There are really no obvious signs of a virus, and shouldn't a windows repair fixed all that anyway?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
