Ok I still cannot get my PC to auto detect the Hard Drive (ATA). I set it to master but still nothing.

Also I have tried to open my DVD/CD drive while in bios and it does not open. Am I not getting power? Or should I NOT be able to open the CD drive? I set the drive to master as well.

I am so close to being finish with the PC but this is just killing me I cannot figure it out.

Could neither of the drive be getting power? But that makes no sense because the PC started up. help please

thanks!

Do you have an IDE optical drive? If so, what is the jumper set to on the optical drive?

Okay... Put both the hard drive and the optical drive on cable select... This way they will work together... You can always switch it later if you wish to.

Is the hard drive spinning up? Is the optical drive's light coming on at bootup? If so, then you are getting power to the devices.

if you are getting lights on your CD-rom drive, you have power. This might be a stupid question, but are the IDE ports enabled in bios? And if so are they set to auto?

Also, it would be best to keep the CDROM / DVD drives on a separate cable from your hds. Not required, but good practice.

ok I got the Bios to detect the HD. It's a Maxtor HD so I want to use the CD that came with it to set it up to install XP. But when I get into the program it says that I do not have a Maxtor HD and will not run the setup. But I DO have a maxtor HD.

Also the HD is coming in as the Slave and the DVD/CD player comes in as master. On channel 0. What should I do?

You need to setup the HD as master and the cdrom / dvd as slave, or better yet move the cd / dvd to the secondary control and leave it as master for that controller. As far as the setup disk for the maxtor, don't use it, let XP partition the drive.

Think you have troubles now? Wait until you use that Maxtor HD for a while.
