Cannot add a dvd rom as slave.

I have a CDRW on ide2 as master and all works fine. I add a DVD ROM to my computer as a slave on ide2, it works but the CDRW does not. I do not change the connections on the CDRW and it is set as master on ide2. When I unplug the connections to the DVD ROM, slave on ide2, the CDRW goes back to working just fine? I am seeing error code 10 when I look in the hardware config. Oh yeah I have the jumpers set to master and slave correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks James

Ok so you made sure the jumpers on the CDRW and the DVDRom is not set to cable select?
If the jumpers are set correctly did you try another cable?
If you tried different cable try putting the DVD rom on IDE 1 as slave and if its accupied by a harddrive put that on the secondary slave and see if those combinations work.

Thanks for the quick reply Matt. yes the jumers are set correctly. I have not tried another cable yet. I'll try that in the morning. I don't believe thats it though. the dvd works with them both connected and the cdrw works only when it is alone. I have not tried ide1 yet either. I'll have to get a different cable to try that. In my case that would be nearly impossible. You believe it's hardware though huh?

I just hooked the dvd back up and yes they do both show up in device manager. I don't see anything about DMA though?

In My Computer the CDRW shows up as Local disk (E: )with a big ? on it. Devices with removable storage is where the dvd is as drive (F: ) like the E does when F: isn't connected

thx

OK I have 2 hardrives on IDE 1 and I have my CDRW and my DVDrom drive on IDE2. Now those optical drives should not be recognized as local disks. Mine saye CDRW drive and DVDrom drive in my winexlore, I am using Winxp pro. If you see a yellow ? then its not working correctly. When you start up your computer does your bios recognize all the drives as its bootiing up? Also trying going into your bios and make your the bios can detect and recognize both the optical drives.

The bios sees both and the device manager sees both. It's just that the device manager has a ! and it doesn't work when both are hooked up. without the slave hooked up all is fine.

I don't see how it could be the cable when they both work, just not together???? Unless there is a short in the cable that only affects that. Tomorrow I'll swap the two and see what happens.

thanks.
