cannot access internet with linksys wireless pc card wpc 11

i have a properly working device showing up in device manager of win2k pro.
the pc card config utility that loaded with the driver install shows link quality and signal strength both at 100%. but i stall can't access internet with this card.
what am i missing here?
i had previously went through the usual windows internet connect exercise in the internet tools/options/connections window and i did it again when i failed to connect.
i used default settings and made sure wep 128 bit passphrases were same and also SSID.
any help greatly appreciated.

What mode do you have the card running in? Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure?

minendo, i have it running in infrastructure mode.
i also talked with an IT friend of mine today at work, and he mentioned configuring a gateway with an IP that opened a port to the internet. sounds easy enough if i knew where to look...?
