Cannot accept icq file transfers through dsl shared connection

Can anyone spread some light on how I can get file transfers to work with my setup?
I have a Cisco dsl router, and a Linksys 5 port hub connected to the dsl router uplink port that allows 4 of my home pc's to share the internet connection.

Ever since setting up the internal network, file transfers from the internet (icq) won't work. I have an idea why, since the hub splits the connection and doesn't know where to send the packets of a file they just sit in limbo and fail to send. Does anyone know what I can do to correct this problem?

I was thinking of buying a 4 port router to connect to the dsl router instead of the hub I have now, (but from what I'm told) I still won't be able to get the transfers to work since each pc will need a different external ip to work. Right now the dsl router has the internet ip for my account, and the pc's each have a different internal ip assigned by the hub.

Is there a setting for icq to correct this? I just want to be able to accept file transfers again while keeping my lan connected to the internet.

My machines are all using Win 98se with MS networking.

Thanks!!

I've had mixed luck getting ICQ file Xfers to go through a routed cable/DSL connection. Most ICQ clients have a Network settings area where you can specify a range of ports that ICQ may use for it's various features. The reason you aren't receiving files is that the world sees your computer's IP to be the IP assigned to your DSL router. There's no way for them to make a direct connection to you without you telling your DSL router which ports to forward.

So, if you set a range of ports for ICQ to use in the ICQ prefs area and then forward that same range of ports from your DSL router to your computer's private internal IP things should work.

Good luck!

What you call 4 port Router, is a combo Router + 4 port switch, which is not much differnt from your combo, i.e if your DSL Modem has a Router in it.

Router setting for ICQ, log here and scroll down to ICQ.

ICQ Port's List.

I was able to fix this on my network by simply checking the ICQ option that indicated I was behind a firewall. Still have the occasional problem, but I'm pretty sure I know why (and why the problem I have can't be fixed).

I have to figure out how to access my dsl router to set the ports in it. I don't see the incoming events now with just the icq settings changed.
Sorry to sound like such a newbie, but once I got my lan running, I quit working on networking for the time being... Now it's time to learn more again.

I'll see if I can access my router and set the ports as in the ICQ port guide site says.

Thanks for the help!!
