Cancun or Vegas?

If you want to go to Cancun, though, 2 hours seems pretty far! And if you're just looking to stay on a resort, why even go to Cancun?

Of course, this begs the question that if you are over the age of 21, why would you go to Cancun at all?

Having been to Cancun, I actually did my best to do touristy-type things during the day like snorkeling, jungle cruise, kayaking, etc. These activities were fun, but nothing spectacular. Not like you need to go to Mexico to cruise around on a PWC for 2 hours. We didn't have enough time to make it to Oaxaca or Chichen Itza although people who went to those places from our group felt that it wasn't worth the drive.

Aside from these things, all that was left to do was pretty much drinking and clubbing. Now don't get me wrong, I like drinking as much as (probably more than) the next guy, and once I get to drinking, I don't mind clubbing, either.

But every time some bouncer stiffed me on change for a cover and then said "No Comprende!" when I asked for change in both my language and his....
Every time some rube begged me to do a shot and then demanded $5 + a tip...
And every time I couldn't bring a girl or even a friend from home up to my room because they give everyone bracelets to prove the are actually staying in the hotel...

I couldn't shake that feeling in the back of my head that I could have done the exact same things, cheaper, and stayed in the good old US, where at least the cops want to arrest you instead of rob you, and the con artists have to use better tactics than "no comprende."

So can anyone explain to me the hype about Cancun? I've been there and I can't figure out why as someone over 21 I would want to go to Cancun instead of Vegas or Miami or New Orleans for drunken debauchery.

Someone clue me in!!!!

vegas = overrated

i'd rather be swimming with the fishies in the crystal clear waters then in desert hell vegas.

So what about Miami?
South Padre?
Long Beach?

There's lots of oceans/bodies of water accessible in the US, with nearby bars, clubs, shopping and hot girls.

The real question isn't Cancun or Vegas, it's why would a 21+ year old looking to party choose Cancun over a similar place right here in the US?

Having been to South Beach and Vegas in my early twenties (...which is NOW! 24 here) I can say that you will spend $$ at either place. Vegas is by far less expensive (unless your a big gambler) than South beach (paid $30 or so per person cover + bouncer to get in VIP at this one place on South Beach...).

Cheap fun - Tampa's Ygor City. TONS of girls up in the clubs for no reason there Thursday to Sunday.

personally for me, once i turned 21, my mexico days became over. ive lived in rosarito for months at a time, ive spent drunken weekends in ensenada and t.j., been to the clear waters of cabo, camped out at hot springs, but i dont know, gambling + drinking on the street plus vegas being a lot closer and without the hassles from police and federales ranks it above mexico. granted, since its close, ill go down there, but its strictly for business (family owns a business down there), and for the lobster at puerto nuevo. 😀

edit: thats not to say i wouldnt mind one day exploring further south of mexico and seeing the ancient and modern cities and such. but that'll be in years to come.
