You are asking for an opinion. Unless we know what your goal for the system is, how can we make solid recommendations without suggesting top-of-the-line components?

get an nforce 415 + a geforce4 4200 if you can afford it. The nforce 220 is definately a budget solution, the intergrated video will be a botleneck in your system. I have the Abit NV7-133R and its is as solid as a rock.

what exactly is being done with the system and what sort of budget is he looking at?

To better respond to your question, most of us are wondering what this computer is to be used for

i.e.

Is it to be used for internet browsing, as a sort of typewriter, gaming rig, video editing, server etc.

Those types of rigs all require different setups,

also we need to know how much money can be spent on this rig <1000, <500, >1000, >2000?

That information is what they are asking you

This should be nice. The power supplies have a good reputation.

Lite On 40X12X48 CDRW Model: LTR40125S-Retail
Liteon has great reputation and cheap. 40 is plenty fast

Teac 1.44MB 3.5 Inch Floppy Drive
Teac are good.

WD WESTERN DIGITAL "SPECIAL EDITION" 80GB
nice. 80G is usually plenty.

Microsoft 114 keys (10 internet Hot Keys
Sometimes MS keyboards are bit overpriced.

2 CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 2100 DDR RAM - OEM
1 512 is better if the premium is not too large.

ArchTek SmartLink 56K V.92 PCI MODEM
have no idea

Viewsonic E70f 17" PerfectFlat CRT Monitor
don't know. The bigger the better as you get older.

Asus A7N266-VM NVIDIA nFORCE 220 Chipset
I got one of these. I think it is great. But NO OCing at all.
You can always put a super video card in the AGP slot later if you want.

Microsoft Intelli-Mouse Explorer Version 3.0a
I like the under $20 Wheel Mouse Optical. I've had fancy mice
and cheap mice, and that is about right.

AMD Athlon XP 1900+/266 FSB Processor
very sensible. plenty fast.

Creative Labs Inspire 4.1 4400 Speaker
don't know. Does your friend really want 5 speakers?
Three seems to be fine with most people and you don't have
the problem of where to put the other two. I know I got five and
I''ll be d*mn if I know why. Because its there?

Looks very safe and reasonable to me.

I thought when using the nforce onboard video, it was advisable to have two dimms so they can run dual-channel and help keep the vid card fed?

my friend will be using it a lot for sound editing recording using programs like cakewalk pro 9.0 and for typing

Yes on the other NVidia chipsets. But not on this mobo (Asus A7N266-VM NVIDIA nFORCE 220 Chipset ) which uses the cheaper chipset that does not have two memory controllers. The 4xx chipsets have two controllers. When I looked at the price of the ones with the 420 chipsets compared to this mobo, you might get a separate 64MB Geforce2MX 400 for the price difference, so it is only this single mobo from ASUS that is such an unbelievable value. It is a mystery to me why ASUS, which specializes in premium mobos, is the only one using this super value 220 chipset. This mobo is only $75 shipped. The 3D video is definately OK for older 3D games and not bad for some recent games if you are not a fanatic.

I would go for an EPOX 8k3a and 64MB Geforce2MX 400 = $72 + 37 =$109 over a $120+ NForce420 mobo.

I think that this setup will do quite nicely. The Nforse 220 is still better than all the other intergrated video options.
