what do I do now? I canceled the order for a western digital 40 gig because they were backordered too long and a week later they sent me an email saying my drive had shipped! and sure enough ups tracking has it almost here, so I emailed buy.com again and again they said they had successfully cancelled the order, is this drive free or are they automatically billing my card.....

buy.com has a tendency to ship once you put in a cancellation request...

chances are you'll get charged. If you do, just return it. Otherwise I wouldnt open the box till you know for sure they won't charge.

By the way they charge like a week after you recieve it soo...

Do a happy dance and install the drive, if they charge your card just complain that you cancelled the order and never received jack squat!

Excellent idea... BUT(a big BUT) you gotta give UPS your signiture for reception, so they can still find out whether you got it or not. By accident I received 2 3Dlabs Oxygen VX graphic card from a company I shopped from, I didnt bother to call them up for it because they found out immediately.

Same thing just happened to me...except it was that plextor 8x4x32. It was a Christmas gift for my brother that I had to get (parents giving it to him). Anyway, with it being backordered for so long I cancelled it. Just yesterday (a week after cancelling) I got an email saying it just shipped. Kinda makes me mad that I have to go through the work of returning it now.

you have to sign for stuff from buy.com? I didn't have to sign for my plextor, they left it at the doorstep.

To save yourself hassle of getting an RMA # and spending money on shipping it back to them, just refuse it on delivery and once they return it back to their warehouse, give them a holler and they'll credit you back. It's pretty smooth. BTW, that's one problem with buy.com - they just ship too damn fast for me. Twice I tried to cancel only to find out that they already shipped! :)

Yep, buy.com uses UPS and they all require signitures. Even if they dont require signitures, buy.com can still track you down with UPS, because UPS has records on things they delivered.

THEY NEVER ASK ME TO SIGN... I come home and its on the porch in the snow... and if I am home when they deliver I hear this "WHUMP! DING DONG" and by the time I get to the door the UPS guy is nowhere to be found. Sure they can confirm it was left on the porch.. but how can they confirm that you physically went out and got the package before the hoodlums next door swiped it? Thats my biggest complaint about UPS... that and the "WHUMP!" I don't really enjoy hearing sensitive electronic equipment drop to the ground outside. I'm sure they go thru far worse treatment along the way, but I don't have to hear it along the way either.

as far as buy.com is concerned.. I like them alot.. never have done me wrong..

AMD4ME2:

Uh... I dont know, I ALWAYS have to sign the UPS shipping for orders from buy.com, I had to sign on many other instances too. As far as I remember I dont recall any order that just got dropped off in front of my door. If Im not home they would leave a notice.

It basically depends on where you live. Not that im saying you live in the ghetto or anything :D , but I know when I had an apartment they would not leave it if I didn't come to the door and I had to sign. I think UPS tracks claims and when they see an area where alot of people aren't getting their stuff they then require signatures. I just got an APC UPS delivered the other day and it was just outside on the porch waiting for me when I got home.

however if in fact Buy.com is requiring signatures and UPS is not getting the signatures I would think that would make UPS liable for anything that was reported as not recieved by the
customer.

UPS has "low risk areas" that they don't require sigs in.
Usually rural areas like I live in.

They ring the doorbell and will have me sign if I'm around, but if not, they leave it in between the doors (if small enough) or put it in my garage.

I think it depends on the UPS driver and the area. For me, they always leave stuff around without needing a signature. I personally don't mind because I live in a nice suburban area and I haven't had anything stolen yet. Plus it's convenient for me because I'm rarely at home during business hours. In fact, one time I ordered some wine online and even though the package specifically read "Over 21 signature required", they just dumped it in front of my door like they do with everything else.

Hm... maybe because I live in an apartment, but the area I live in is pretty good. Anyway, I think requiring signiture is a good thing.

Refuse delivery of the package. UPS will send it back no charge to you.

I have a similar situation, so rather than posting another new message, I figure that I will put it here.

I ordered a IBM HD from buy.com for my parent's christmas present. Since they didn't know about it, I had them ship to my work. Somehow the website did not show the suite number or company name on the shipping address. I noticed this the next day a tried to cancel the order (I didn't really want to cancel but didn't want the package to get lost). As you might guess, the harddrive did show up at work with the company name on the label. This happened a week ago. Buy.com still has not charged my credit card for the drive, and their website shows the order as having cancellation requested.

Did I get the HD free? I don't plan on opening the box until after christmas. should I contact them in the meantime, I do want the HD and do not mind them charging my card, but I also don't have a lot of time before christmas because my finals are this week.

Thank you for your help and ideas! :)

UPS leaves packages on my porch all the time, regardless of whether it's ground service, second day, or overnight. Generally, however, with overnight they do ask me to sign for it.

It all depends on whether or not the shipper paid the extra $$ for the signature required delivery option.

I bought the 40gig maxtor & zip deal with PM for $119 at Staples = a much better deal, and if I could still get the WD $30 rebate I would keep it, but that rebate is dead now.I can't say UPS didn't ship it because that's not right( you know the ethic's thingy)but I dont think they should charge me for a drive that they verified canceled twice. if they insist I'll try to have them pay for return just like a RMA when they send you a label and the driver picks it up, I'll call the cred card comp and see if they charge me....
oh ya ....Whump!... Ding Dong! He He

called the rep and asked to have my acct credited, he asked if I was returning it ?I said no it was cancelled and verified cancelled by you via email, he looked it up and said 3 to 5 days and your acct will be credited have a nice day...well if this is true then I certainly will : )
