Canceling HD Cable/Sat and going with just an antenna.

Cable prices are outrageous as I'm sure most of you know. So I was thinking I might try canceling my cable TV altogether and running off an HD antenna. 90% of what I watch is primetime network shows that I could get over the air anyway. I'm not really one to just channel surf and watch random sh!t. My biggest thing is losing a DVR(I use the cable company's), but I figure I can download pretty much every show I record so if I missed something it's not the end of the world.

Anyone else with HD cancel their cable or satellite to run strictly antenna and happy with the decision?

I'd do it. I download a lot of my TV shows anyway...and from what I hear, OTA HD looks excellent.

Really? That's cool. If I buy a HDTV Air Antenna for a regular tv set (non-hd) would I see an improvement over a normal antenna?

Also, the only reason I have basic cable ($15/month) is because I get a deal on the cable internet.

You have to have a tuner that can read the HD signals. A lot of newer HDTVs are coming with them, or you can buy them. Mine is in the TV, so I'd just have to get the antenna.

I did it and liked it better after a while. Now that my roommate has cable again, I probably average less than 4 hours a week (I watch a lot more movies though my blockbuster account).

Yeah, I watch more movies and play more 360 than I do watch TV, so I figure I could put the $70 or so a month to better use, like purchasing more .

I read somewhere that cable and sat has more compression than OTA.

I never had HD cable/sat, primtime HD all the way 🙂

Lol, I started watching less TV when I got my DLP then I did before. I'm just a lot more picky now.

Negative. There would be no point in doing that.

I did it while I was at school, because I got good reception. After moving, I was too far from the broadcast towers 🙁.

Works great if you can recieve the channels you want.

I haven't paid for cable since 1998; I don't watch much tv, and getting Fox and ABC OTA takes care of me for the most part. Can't watch UPN or WB though... 🙁

My roommate moved out on July 1st and I cancelled cable at the same time. Now I have 9 local stations with nothing interesting on compared to 50 or more channels with nothing on with cable.

Added bonus....Picture quality is actually better now with most channels than it was with Comcast

lol
