Apple, only 19.3%. They're including ultrabooks and notebooks as mobile devices though, because Microsoft's Windows 8 phones are no where near 18.3% market share.

Total smart mobile device (notebook, tablet and smart phone) shipments for the Q1 hit 308.7 million units, according to Canalys’ latest worldwide estimates. This represents year-on-year growth of 37.4%. In terms of OS vendors, the Open Handset Alliance continues to dominate, with Android the OS of choice on 59.5% of all smart mobile devices shipped. Of the other OS vendors, Apple’s strength in the smart phone and tablet PC markets accounts for its 19.3% share, while Microsoft’s 18.1% share reflects its relative strength in the PC market but continued challenger status in the smart phone space.

Of the three, the tablet market continues to grow the fastest. Worldwide, tablet shipments grew 106.1% year-on-year to 41.9 million units. Though Apple continues to lead in the tablet space with a 46.4% share, it lost share to its Android-based rivals for the third consecutive quarter. ‘Spearheaded by Google and Amazon, the commoditization of the tablet market has happened far quicker than that of the wider PC market,’ said Canalys Senior Analyst, Tim Coulling. ‘Profit margins are being squeezed and vendors without a low cost structure will find it hard to compete. A solid range of must-have accessories and a software and services strategy are vital as vendors will increasingly need to make revenue around their devices.’

Smart phone shipments came in at just over 216.3 million for the quarter, maintaining the strong growth (47.9% this quarter) that the market saw throughout 2012. Android handsets accounted for 75.6% of total smart phone shipments, and Samsung dominated once again, growing its volume by 64.3% year-on-year, which helped its market share exceed 32%. In contrast, Apple saw modest annual growth (6.7%) in its smart phone shipments – the lowest level since the launch of the original iPhone back in 2007.

‘Despite its slowing growth, Apple still shipped over 37 million iPhones,’ said Pete Cunningham, Canalys Principal Analyst. ‘But HTC and Samsung have raised the bar with their latest handsets and Apple needs to respond with its next iPhone. The iPhone user interface is now six years old and badly in need of a refresh. Hardware-wise, the biggest dilemma that Apple faces is what it does with the size of the display on the next iPhone. It cannot afford to ignore the trend for larger displays in premium smart phones. We expect an increase on the iPhone 5’s 4" display but are not anticipating a “Phablet”-style iPhone.’

Wow.. That is SOOOO not true! What a blatant lie! I live in the capital of the world.. New York City. I ride the train to work every day. Guess what I see people using... About 80-90% use iPhones. There are A LOT of ipads and ipad minis. There are now more Samsung Galaxy S3's. I hear their annoying default whistling every time the text message arrives. It definitely feels like they are encroaching on Apple's territory, yet for ever Galaxy I see, I see about 10 iphones.

As for Android Tablets or any other tablets, those are a very, very rare sight indeed. I see a few Galaxy Tabs, some Lenovos, plenty of Nooks and Kindles. Didn't see any Nexuses, but maybe that's just me.

Either way, every businessman type looking guy I see, is always doing something on his iPad with that look like he is doing something important. It's always an iPad, not something else.

NYC isn't the world. It's far richer than the world, on average. Especially the "businessman type looking guy". What passes for upper-middle or middle-class in New York City, especially midtown and downtown Manhattan, is way above the standard of living of most people in the world. The report is talking about worldwide sales. Even if Apple captures a lot of the premium/high-end phone market, Android dominates the lower end.

I thought you had a galaxy s4 lol

Someone is a little sour that apple is losing market share today lol

Why don't you go make another fake review about pulling the battery out of your s4 every 5 min

Its funny how you say in your reviews you are not an apple fan boy but when I read your post here all I can think of is a little 7 year old yelling and screaming to his parents and complaining while stompping his feet on the ground with tears coming down his face.

Lies lies I tell you!!! Thanks man I actually laughed at your responce

I'm trying to figure what you do for a living. Honestly, who totally ignores market research and decides that everything they don't see must be false?

I am hoping to see MS's share of tablets and notebooks improve. With an iPad 2, Galaxy Tab 2 (Android), and a Samsung Smart PC (Win 8) tablet all in the house, its the Win 8 tablet that I like the most.

I could care less about Windows Phone, but I want to see Win 8 tablets be a success. I still like Apple products, but the thought of an Apple monopoly scares the hell out of me.

I would certainly hope so. Android is on so many devices that you can buy. Whether its a free phone, $100 tablet, or a $500 tablet. You dont have those kind of options with Apple.

I too am in NYC and yes, its probably true. Why? Because many Android users are not actually flashing their phones in the subway or in public like most NYC iphone users. We dont have that "OOH LOOKY AT MY SHINY MOBILE GADGET! AINT I BOSS?!" mentality.

Strage, I live in NYC too, and just yesterday I counted what phones the people on my train were using. I counted 3 iPhones compared to 6 Galaxy s3/Notes and a single Galaxy Nexus.

I see Galaxy's on the street more than iPhones.

Heh. I see a lot of iPhones on the subway, but most of them are 4/4Ses that I'm guessing were bought way after release for cheap on contract.

It certainly isn't a status symbol.

Uhh... What? I never made any fake reviews, especially saying that I have to take out the battery to do anything. Read my REAL review again.

Someone is sour about me saying that I thought the Galaxy S4 is garbage...

(I did probably come off as somewhat "pissed". That was not cool of me. I should start replying in a calmer more objective way)

I'm trying to figure what you do for a living. Honestly, who totally ignores market research and decides that everything they don't see must be false?

Well that's the thing. Things on paper, often don't reflect things happening in "real life".
And I'll make it easy for you. I am a computer technician in a college. I repair computers, and troubleshoot various problems for professors and students.

I wonder what you'll do with this information now when you know. ; )

I never flash my iPhone either. And I didn't buy it for its looks. I bought it because I wanted something stable that doesn't lag. Ever.

Ok, so that's another observation. It's not like mine is the only one!

Actually, I am seeing a lot more S3s in NYC subway. Other than my S4 I have seen maybe 4 others. I cop a peek at the screens to see if they are closer to the bezel as the s4s screen is slightly larger than the s3. I went white with the s4 but miss the pebble blue of my s3. White is looking a little "fem" to me. I may swap for black.

What I see is a lot more annoying ipads on the subway. I usually stand on the train and have managed to "knee" a few. I dont go out of my way to hit them but I also dont go out of my way to not hit them. I prefer a 7" tab on the train. Its real obnoxious using a large pad with the brightness turned all the way up.

An iPhone does not lag? Ever? really?
Now we know that you're a fraud.

Low ass number considering the number of Android devices you can buy compared to the number of iOS/WP8 devices you can buy. Android should have 80% of the market EASY.

When? When there are 100 different Android devices for sale for every 1 iOS or WP8 model? What an accomplishment!

Oh man, look at all those Android full fledged laptops that are sold. Apple and MS definable dont have massive mobile PC industries. Android is killing them in the laptop and netbook business.

Well, if we're just talking phones, I'd guess maybe... a year or two? :p

Actually, it's pretty amazing (if a person thinks rationally about it, not going emo because they're cheerleading for some company) that Android's numbers are still well in the majority when factoring in mobile devices other than phones. I would have thought that would bring the number way down, since -as noted- Android has very little presence on notebooks/ultrabooks, and I wouldn't have guessed was that big in the overall tablet market either. The numbers are extremely impressive, all things considered. Unless one has an emo-chip on their shoulder about it, that is.

I did'nt belive that tablet market continues to grow the fastest. Worldwide and your indecators didn't fit with the information I had (will not add URL as I am new member here) in which tablet shipments grew about 72.8%.
