Im just curious because in another thread a little while ago, a canadian mentioned that he hated america and said it was ugly and cited the only 2 cities he had ever been to down here were Detroit & Buffalo (hahaha). Im just wondering what cities you guys think is your shining glory, so one day if i make it up there on a trip i'll know the best of canada....

(I dont think the thread title is proper english, but im lazy today)

in terms of large city/metropolis I'd say Vancouver and Montreal (for the atmosphere and old city).

It depends. For natural beaty in a large city I would pick vancouver. There are many beautiful small cities but of the larger cities (500,000+ people) vancouver is hard to beat. For cultural beauty/beautiful building ect. I would say Montreal with an honorable mentioned to Victoria.

Having been in almost all the major Canadian cities, I would have to say either St. John's, Newfoundland for its unique beauty or Victoria, British Columbia for its classic beauty!

I am not canadian, but I have been to several big Canadian cities. Montreal is very nice, but I found Calgary to be almost picturesque

Guh... Whistler is a collection of teenage pop culture nonsense.

Try Banff or Jasper.

GoodRevrnd - Agreed, but it is a darn pretty place if you got rid of all the people :)

rickn - I agree, Calgary does have its charm... I think Edmonton is prettier than Calgary though.

I agree with MrsSkoorb, the nicest larger city in Canada is Victoria, BC although I hear it's getting overrun by tourists now. :(

For small towns, Banff, AB is the nicest. There are other small mountain towns like Castlegar, BC that are nice as well.

It's a good thing Calgary was mentioned a couple times on here. I'm heading there in less than 2 weeks for a week-long vacation. We're also heading to Banff (sp?)... supposedly it's a good touristy place. Woulda loved to hit Vancouver too, but they say it's a good 12-13 hours away by car. That's like driving from NY to Chicago!

Vancouver, Whistler, Fernie (the new whistler), Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton.

Just don't go to Surrey BC ;)

Cheers,

Other then the already mentioned, you should definitely check out Montreal?

Also, St. John is good if you want some peace and quiet with breath taking scenery? but after 6, it?s the capital city of boredom. ;)

Umm... people should specify downtown Calgary only. The outskirts of Calgary (and near the
airport), with all the new cookie-cutter, grassless, treeless "communities" being built with the exact
same strip mall every 3 blocks has to rate as one of the ugliest, most soulless urban areas in Canada.
It was absolutely a jarring scene after spending a week at Banff and Lake Louise.

Probably an after-effect of having the olympics there.

Well... the gf's from up there and she always talks about how beautiful Calgary is...

Also, she can't stop raving about Banff, guess I'll have to check it out one of these days.

Only place I've been to is BC which I pretty much only saw from the upper deck of a cruise ship. Sure is picturesque though...

Jasper is much better than Banff IMO, but that is because the tourist count isn't too bad there. Banff is absolutely packed over the summer. Ug..

Montreal and Quebec City are very nice. I just didn't like the fact that half the people seemed to be total pricks, while the other half were very nice.

I prefer Calgary over Edmonton. Vancouver and Victoria are also quite nice...but I don't like traffic at all :p oh and the ferry is very expensive if your planning to go over to the island with your car.. (I think its $130 CDN for a round trip).

Vancouver make Seattle look like a back alley.

Victoria is not only beautiful, but has the best climate in Canada.
