TORONTO (AP) -

<< Canadians like to joke about how little their southern neighbors know about Canada, but a new survey suggests a lack of knowledge also exists north of the border.

Sixty percent of 1003 Canadians failed a 10-question quiz of Canadian facts and history, compared to more than 60 percent of 1,000 Americans who passed a quiz of questions about their country and its history.

For example, the survey showed 79 percent of the Americans knew the first line of their national anthem, while only 37 percent of the Canadians knew the first line of the Canadian anthem.

Ninety percent of Americans surveyed correctly identified George Washington as the country's first president, while 54 percent of Canadians knew Sir John A. Macdonald was Canada's first prime minister.

The survey was conducted by the Ipsos-Reid polling company and the Dominion Institute, an independent group that seeks to make Canadians more aware of their history.

What I'm worried about is the 10% who didn't know George Washington was the first president.

Ever taken a history course at a canadian high school?

Holy crap are those thin. They don't teach you anything. I have to dig to remember John A MacDonald. And what year we actually became a country rather than british colonies still eludes me.....and Today is Canada Day (our equivilant of the 4th of July). I think it's 134 years today...but I'm not sure.

its true, but then again there is a lot of american history shown on television (like even in sitcoms) and america has an overwhelming amount of national pride than canada. infact i think that all canandian pride is just made up by beer companies to sell beer (I AM...)

but yeah, its sad but true.

but we have mr. dressup and ketchup chips and milk in bags.

*kat. <-- knows oh canada and the first primeminister.

Mr. Dressup is Canada's version of Mr Rogers. In fact they are good friends.

If you asked that in Canada the number probably would have been higher ;)

Thats gotta be BS. I'm American, and I know more than 1/2 the national anthem of Canada. 21% Americans don't know the first line of the Star-Spangled Banner? I don't think so.

actually its quite sad, history classes have been lacking in quantity and quality now in america with little emphasis on it.

When I took history we had to learn about all this american crap that I didn't even care about, and we also learned about canada. Of course that was this year, so things have probably changed since some of the older people took the course. Personally I don't believe that article that is at the top of the page, and if it is true, it was probably a survey taken of those damn quebeckers
