I thought I answered it in my first sentence.

Umm, a city is exactly the place to do that.

How many water faucets have you stumbled upon while hiking in the forest or desert?

Fern

Where are they going to go this magical water faucet without getting into trouble for using someone else's water? I mean your reasoning is so irrational. There is no forest in or near Detroit, and the poor elderly aren't going to go hike to get it. Many might be disable too, so just how is that hiking to someone else's water faucet going to work out especially if have of their neighborhood has no water, and its all been shut off?

As the official representative of Canada on these forums I would like to denounce the actions of these few bleeding hearts. Pay your damn water bill.

Alternatively, I would bless the adoption of Detroit by Canada as long as it meant we get the Red Wings in the deal.

Aren't our hockey teams all Canadian anyway?

drinking water should be free.

its not hard to grasp.

So we can all just run water from the nearest creek? Because if people are paying money for water then there is no money for pipes, water treatment, people to maintain the infrastructure, etc. water does not magically appear in someone's house after they install a faucet.

A thread about a serious situation that could have explored deeper issues starts as poo flinging and doesn't move from there.

P&N in a nutshell.

its not hard to grasp.

And the people in Detroit have a river where they can drink all the free water they want.

But like most things, delivery is available for an extra fee. Filtering and treatment of water also available for a nominal fee.

What I do find obscene is those regulations that make the collection of rainwater illegal. I seem to recall a thread from last year discussing an incident like that.

Have you tried the gas station?

Back in my skateboarding days, we would bring empty pop bottles or clamato bottles and fill them at mcdonalds.

The government also says you should report preppers because they might be terrorists. Do you own a water filter? You might be a terrorist. Do you store more than 1 week worth of food? You might be a terrorist. Do you own physical gold or silver? You might be a terrorist. Do you own solar panels or wind turbines? You might be a terrorist. Do you talk about paying off your debts? You might be a terrorist. Is your skin either brown or not brown? You might be a terrorist.

Most McDonalds here do NOT have free water. There is no water on the soda machine. In fact most fast food places here do NOT have free water. There is NO requirement that you are provided with free water.

I don't buy that for one second.

Every fast food place across the country, hell, ANY restaurant period, where you order "water" or "ice water", you are simply not charged. Period.

Bottled water, sure. But water in a paper cup with ice and a straw, get real.

You're thinking on too small a level. We should bus these folks into Canada and drop them off. Tell them to say they are seeking asylum from the dangers of Detroit. Have Canada feed, clothe and house them as well as provide for their education and health care.

I'll bet Orignal Earl would take them in personally.

"I've never had to worry about paying for water, even though I still pay my water bill, so everyone should live like me but without paying!" <--- Water rights activist logic

Either through taxes or direct payments, that plumbing infrastructure isn't going to build and maintain itself.

It's called a bathroom. You take a bottle and put it under the faucet like the picture shows.

Collecting rain water is illegal? Not around here ), but anyway.

I am either going to die from lack of water because I wouldn't want to break the law and collect rain water. Hmmmm such a hard decision.

I searched and found this link:

http://www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?p=1036#michigans

Update January 15, 2014 regarding Michigan:

After 3 hours at the Michigan state government website, I found nothing saying that rain barrels, or rainwater harvesting by individual homeowners is against the law. I did find one document recommending the use of rain barrels (on page 5)by individual home owners here. I found another document recommending rain barrel usage here. Its not against state law in Michigan for homeowners to collect rain water, it is encouraged.

So in actuality they can have all the free water they want, they just have to collect it from nature first.

Over 15k residential homes have had their water shut off, do you realize how many people that is?? Are you saying that mobs and masses of poor, elderly, disabled, children converge on some local gas station for water? Right... You also assume that these incredibly poor areas have many gas stations, or mcdonalds. They don't even have local food marts. Detroits poverty stricten areas have if they are lucky a gas station one for every 20 miles that has only crap items like donuts, and canned shit, a chips, and soda water.

Again the logic of some on this board is irrational, and in fantasy land.

Poor parts of those neighborhoods in Detroit around a lot of these broken down abandoned homes are homes that people do live in. These are the slum areas where a lot of very poor destitute and even homeless people live in Detroit.

detroit-abandonded.jpg

This is brightmoore a very poor area of Detroit, there are no jobs nothing at all around this area, not even a gas station:

This is the closet that you get in some areas to a food mart

In some better areas you might get this

while I understand that the situation isn't good but, seriously, people need to pay their bills. Entitlement will get Detroiters nowhere.

perhaps some accommodation by the city could be made, but in the long run people must be responsible for themselves. Stop wasting money on lottery tickets (idiot tax), stop wasting money on vices like smoking, drinking and drugs, stop eating fast food, etc... then they will have money to pay their bills with instead of demanding someone else pay it for them.

A note of caution.

Can't speak about rain water but when I lived in St. Joseph MI, the EPA declared it illegal to dump snow into Lake Michigan. (Something about pollution.)

At the time, the city would just push snow from their street cleaning into Lake Michiagan. EPA had problems with pollution from that...

EPA approved solution was putting the snow on rail cars and sending it south...

To me, getting our Canadian neighbors to bring more water to Detroit seems like a pretty good solution to the instant problem.

I mean, isn't water a human right? How can Canadians be so heartless as to stand by and do nothing while so many on their border lack basic human rights?

Don't misunderstand. I am sure that the thirsty Detoiters are grateful for the 1000 litres of Canadian water.

But 1000 litres isn't really a solution is it? Is 1000 litres really the best that the Canadian Social Justice Warriors can do?

I am pretty sure that to those who got that water, are pretty damn grateful.

You can't pay bills if you have no jobs. In most of Detroit there are virtually no jobs to be found. Many in the very bad parts of Detroit, like in the pictures I linked above have no means of transportation either to get to the good parts of Detroit where there might possibly be jobs, but even if they could the chances are slim to none that they would get the jobs. Most of the people of color, those who are the ones who are being hit by this are not getting the jobs. Look up the statistics on the joblessness in Detroit. That is why this city is in such dire straights.

This city has an obligation to its citizens. Like I said the bigger news will come when people start dying from lack of water.

When we see the Headlines of lots of people and children dying from no water. That is when you are really going to see people outraged out the shutting off of the water. Shutting off the water amounts to a death sentence to many of these folks.
