I will be travelling to Edmonton in July and was wondering if there are any special things I should be aware of when travelling to Canada.

I know I need a passport or US birth certificate.

Is it better to exchange currency at home or in Canada or does it matter?

Just get your money changed at a bank. They should give you the current rate for your exchange. If you're exchanging alot, 1 or 2% might make a big difference. We always just stop at a royal bank in Canada, but there's no reason not to do it in the US I guess.
If you're driving, keep your headlights and seatbelts on all the time and don't bring a radar detector.
I'm sure the Canadians will have more to add, but that's all I can really think of at the moment.

you can change your $ at the airport...if you cant get a passport you can get a notarized letter stating you are a us citizen (call a travel agent they will know what i mean)

1) Banks don't just give you the current market price for exchange, shop around. Check the market price on CNN or somewhere, call your bank, if they are within a few cents, exchange it there.
2) Don't bring any firearms.
3) Leave you skis at home :D
4) seatbelts are mandatory, headlights won't get you in trouble, but everyone should use them anyway
