Group claims to have bombed Quebec hydro tower

MONTREAL - A group opposed to the export of power from Quebec to the United States has claimed responsibility for damaging a Hydro-Québec tower by setting off an explosive charge.

The St-Herménégilde tower, located near Coaticook in the Eastern Townships, is part of a line that carries power from James Bay to the Boston area.

A hunter noticed the structure appeared to be damaged and tilting last Tuesday, but the investigation was delayed by snow that covered its base and obscured the nature of the damage.

Calling itself by the initials IRI, the group sent a message to newspapers La Presse and Le Journal de Montréal and radio station CKAC.

It said its members set the charge to denounce the ''pillaging'' of Quebec's resources by the U.S.

Police say they have never heard of the group, but acknowledge the tower appears to have been damaged by an explosive charge that was placed at its base.

The flow of electricity was not interrupted by the explosion, Hydro-Québec spokesperson Marie Archambault told Radio-Canada.

The investigation is being conducted by the Sûreté du Québec, Hydro-Québec and the Canadian counter-terrorism force.

Of all the causes to bomb something...this is weak.

Especially in Quebec...they have good reliability and the power is public run so they have some of the lowest prices in the country.

I don't exaclty keep tabs on hydro power, but how is it robbing of resources when it's a renewable resource? It's not like they're drilling for oil. It's kind of like bombing a wind farm and saying that you're stealing the wind.

Ya...look at this...both rural and urban quebec pay $48/600kwh or $0.08 per kWh
Rural alberta is over twice that. Ontario is over 50% more than quebec.

a) get prime minister to read book to kids...get notified...make stupid face.
b) invent a terror alert rainbow for all canadian tv channels.
c) go to bomb site, say we will pull together and find whoever has done it.
d) goto family of bombers...ship them out of the country first class to another nation where they can live like kings.
e) invade some random country with usable resources with coalition of the willing.
f) suffer huge casualties, change reasons for going to fool public.
g) federal and provincial governements get reelected on fear of more bombings and patriotic nonsense.
