Canadian memo supports claim Obama lied to Ohio on NAFTA

Well, to be fair, it wasn't Obama. It was one of his staffers at an informal low level meeting, and he strongly disputes the Canadian's characterization.

Fom your link:

Barack Obama's senior economic policy adviser privately told Canadian officials to view the debate in Ohio over trade as "political positioning," according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was rejected by the adviser and held up Monday as evidence of doublespeak by rival Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Goolsbee said he has been surprised that such a banal and trivial meeting with a low-level consulate official has created so much controversy and resulted in such an inaccurate depiction. He said he was invited to the consulate to meet the officials and get a tour.

He said the visit lasted about 40 minutes, and perhaps two to three minutes were spent discussing NAFTA. He said the Canadians asked about Obama's position, and he replied about his interest in improving labor and environmental standards, and they raised some concerns that Obama sounds like a protectionist.

He said he responded that Obama is not a protectionist, but that the Illinois senator tries to strike a balance between the economic struggles of working Americans and recognizing that free trade is good for the economy.

"That's a pretty ham-handed description of what I answered," Goolsbee said of memo's description of "political positioning." "A: In no possible way was that a reference to NAFTA. And B: In no possible way was I inferring that he was going to introduce any policies that you should ignore and he had no intention of enacting. Those are both completely crazy."

Personally I think they both need to calm down on some of the NAFTA rhetoric.

I am aware of a lot of jobs going South to Mexico (we've lost some, if not a lot, in my area). I'm not aware of any going to Canada, maybe that's happened in other states?

But I understand that we (US) have recieved some very valuable benefits in the area of energy/oil from Canada with NAFTA, and experts are now saying we need to be careful how we treat them so we don't end up cutting off our nose to spite our face etc.

They do need to go calm on it, but if this is among the worst we can find about Obama, we ought to sleep well at night.

Well it looks like NAFTA-gate is much to do about nothing, but it probably will be enough to tip Ohio voters in Clinton's favor...nothing like a little 11th hour disinformation.

Now you have conservative talk show hosts urging Republicans to vote for Clinton in the open Texas primaries tomorrow.

Yep, it looks like Clinton will successfully cause the Democrats to implode.

Let's reverse the tables...if Obama was facing 11 straight losses to Hillary coming out of Super Tuesday, there would be enormous pressure for him to back out of the race for the sake of the party.

But no, not Hillary Clinton...she keeps shifting the goal line down the field, and all she needs is one win tomorrow to justify the continuation of her campaign.

Democrats needs to wake the hell up...if Clinton continues past tomorrow through PA, it will cause both her and Obama to turn up the heat even further...more negative ads...more political maneuvering...more damage control...with McCain laughing all the way to the White House.

Yes, I will admit that the Democrats are remarkably skilled at defeating themselves. Don't get me wrong, Republicans tend to run the nastiest, most bloodthirsty campaigns imaginable, but for all the talk of Karl Rove's genius, I think the Democrats keep doing it to themselves.

Well that really is the point. Hillary lost her lead, and is using a variety of Rovian tactics to erode at Obama's momentum.

I honestly hope he puts her away tomorrow so that we can focus on the General Election. I honestly find the thought of McCain vs. Obama appealing...it would be the first election in a long time where I want to hear hat the candidates have to say, regardless of political affiliation.

If Hillary continues past tomorrow, you can bet that her campaign will continue to cast doubt on Obama as a candidate...I don't think it will be enough for her to secure the nomination, but it will be enough to weaken Obama for his content against McCain

OR

Hillary will manage to reclaim the lead, and the nomination...but in doing so, will alienate and disenfranchise the very supporters who have made this campaign season so youthful and exciting for the Democrats.

Hillary against McCain is experience vs. experience...McCain can dance around Clinton on the experience front, while also managing to tap into independents.

Are you kidding? Two senate terms vs 10000 senate terms + 5 years in a Vietnam POW camp? Should McCain count his time as husband to that one older woman too?

Hillary's experience + answering the phone tactic is going to shoot either one of them in the foot against McCain

Why did the Canadian government "leak" this again? Now they are saying they aren't trying to influence the election? .....

There was no damage done. This was not a big story and anything not done by today is moot anyway since today is the day Hillary's campaign becomes winnable only to ron paul supporter wannabes.

Yeah, I wanna know how an internal (private) Canadian State Dept memo was released to another country's (USA) general population at a sensative moment (primary battle).

I heard Anderson Cooper wonder aloud about it on his show. Hopefully they'll get somebody on it to investigate.

Thank you for interfering in the primaries, Canada. There must be a reason why the Queen would authorize such a leak.

Hopefully Obama remembers this if he is president. Make the Canadians tremble...

I was thinking more about a direct strike at the Queen's interests, not the peasants.

Why would I care about that? We're talking about Canadian interference here.

So you don't want someone to talk about Canada in a thread about Canada?

Someone who hasn't an agenda like you. It makes what little credibility you think you may have seem even more suspect.

More of the change people are hoping for?

He didn't really mean what he said, it was just political positioning.

do you tell half truths much??

Sure I do..then again, I'm not running for president and asking people to hold me to a higher standard. I'm not saying that I'll be different from the old politics. I'm not declaring to the world that I bring honesty and integrity. What a joke.

On a side not...B.O. must be somewhat concerned about the Rezko trial too. He had his people in court to monitor it and he ran out on reporters who were trying to question him on the topic. This might get interesting.
