Heh...I recently got an email from the Company Sergeant-Major of B Coy (Artillery) over in Afghanistan...

Apparently, one of the reservists overseas from my unit managed to land a 155mm shell...

On a moving truck...

Doing 50 km/h...

from 20km away.

BOOYAH!

Don't they have auto-guiding shells now so you don't have to aim your artillery guns anymore?

Oh wait.... This is the Canadian army your talking about .... 😉

Yup. GPS-guided shells. They're freakin' cool. Have to plug them into a laptop to program them...

Mind you, they're also 5k a shot, so we don't use them much. That shot was done all manually, with hand calculations.

Just curious. Exactly how do you do the hand calculations while the enemy is moving down the road at 50mph? with a pen and paper? with a calculator? is there a computer program involved? how long does it take?

It's 50 km/hr, and that's around 30 mph. Still, I'm not arguing how good of a shot that must have been.

Well basically this is how it works.

There's a guy up near where the "impact zone" is, called a Forward Observation Officer (FOO). He sees the truck. Relays instructions back to the Command Post, who relays them to the firing gun. Gives them a grid coordinate, and basically says "Up 200, left 100" and the adjustments are made into the gun. Takes about 10 seconds.

That shot was really a fluke I think though. Apparently landed directly on the truckbed.
