Wonder what it ended at today; it was still 0.9984 at 1-ish pm. Too bad this means absolutely nothing to me:(. I never go cross-border raiding or buy online (customs rape), and the prices ar local stores are still a joke. Some speakers I want are still 20% or so more expensive here than in the US, even when they are made about an hours drive away from where I live.

damn it, now we can't joke about CAN dollars being worthless anymore.... i guess this is pay back.

they can actually come here in groups and buy all our goods because it is cheaper now.

it's never a good thing when your neighbor has cheaper goods. and your own people have the money to spend.

even before it reached parity i know people from ontario who would go to western new york state to shop because of their ridiculous canadian tax.

i guess thats what they have to pay for free health care. but they want their pies and eat it too

It is both good and bad (slightly more this one though) for the US. It remains to be seen if this is going to be long or short term.

You're right about retail sales though....Canadian retailers are going to see their sales drop like a freaking meteor now that we've hit parity.

So as the US Dollar gets 'weaker' our exportable goods and services become relatively cheaper to other countries. This makes sense... my college macro econ prof would kill me if he knew I'd forgotten all of this. :)

Where the heck do you think you guys get most of your water, oil, and lumber from? You still need to pay for all that stuff, and it now costs twice as much as it did 5 years ago. Yes, Canadians are buying across the border for US goods, but we are paying less out of pocket for those same goods that were being imported into Canada in the first place. The money was eventually going to the US for that stuff. Oh and FYI, we still have to pay all taxes when we cross the border so that's not where we get our savings from.

Every indicator shows the Canadian economy is absolutely booming, and has grown at a faster rate this year then the US economy despite this surge in the currency, yet we are in trouble? Oh right, our healthcare is all to blame!:confused:

If you are gonna rant, do it with some logic and economical facts, not some mindless Republican talking points that don't even make sense.

far as i know, water is pumped up from aquifers locally, not piped in from canadia or mexico. if i buy bottled it may be canadian tho.

You are right, not sure why I put in water as an export next to oil and lumber. We actually don't export any water at all to the US, as it's still a very hot debated topic. The US wants it, Canada doesn't want to give it. My error on that one.

Most of this is being fueled by our domestic credit issues and rising oil prices.

Long term parity is better for Canada than the US on the whole.
The real question is will it continue this way, which I am inclined to doubt once our mortgage fiasco eventually abates.
