Canadian Bacon

Crab cake

It looks like ham and tastes like ham, why do you call it bacon?
Is "American" bacon available in Canada?
When you Canadians go to the market to get bacon, is Canadian bacon the default choice?

Sorry for all the questions. I had homemade pizza topped with Canadian bacon last night and it was the best pizza I have ever had.

LoL I thought the same thing.

Canadian Bacon = ham to me.

Looks like ham
Tastes like ham
It's HAM~!!

You realize that both come from a pig.

Perhaps "bacon" just refers to the curing process, and maybe canadian bacon comes from a different place of the pig than ham does.

I think most ham comes from the back of legs/ass, regular bacon from belly, and "Canadian" from the loins

I learned this from a small, hideous sculpture someone had

Most Bacon is from the Back, AFAIK.

When I was in Toronto once, I ordered "bacon" at breakfast and got some disgusting thing called "peameal bacon" instead. Barf.

The first time I had Canadian Bacon was in the USA. The slices of ham that were called "Canadian Bacon" in the USA were ham where I grew up (Montreal area) and "Back Bacon" in a few other places. What we called bacon ws the same as what is called bacon in the USA.

Canadian bacon is made the rib-eye of the pork loin. In the U.S. bacon is made from pork bellies.

Around the turn of the last century (or as they say, "during the war years"), England had a pork shortage. They imported side bacon from Canada, smoked it and termed it "Wiltshire Sides" in England. Due to this event Canadian bacon was made famous. Over time the United States believed that Canadian bacon was smoked back bacon although true Canadian bacon is not smoked.

Isn?t ?Canadian bacon? really just ham? It?s close, but not quite.
Ham comes from the rear leg of the pork carcass, and Canadian bacon comes from the loin, an area that originates just behind the shoulder and travels along the backbone to the hip region. Regular bacon is from the belly ? which explains why it contains more fat.

Its really spam.

As for real bacon......mmmmmmm

/me leaves for school early to grab some grub 😀.
