Canadian Airlines forced to give morbidly obese passengers free seat

Story

Canada's two largest airlines must give disabled and morbidly obese passengers an extra free seat on domestic flights, beginning in January, after the Supreme Court of Canada refused Thursday to consider the carriers' appeal to a federal order.

The Supreme Court, by convention, gave no reason for declining to intervene in the case.

The decision ended a six-year battle by disabled travellers to secure two seats for the price of one if they need inflight attendants. Obese people can also qualify if they are too big to fit in a single seat.

For disabled people, ok. But for obese??

An airline can put a maximum weight on luggage. Would it be legally possible to change it to a maximum weight on passenger + luggage? Just set that to 300 or 350 pounds, and charge a few hundred dollars per pound extra. That should solve it quite nicely.

Seriously, if the obesity is caused by a chronic illness then it's no problem. If it is because you can't be bothered to move except for shoving more food down your throat then you should not get any freebies.

They should crate them up and ship them as cargo instead and save the seats for the people who pay.

What would you say is a reasonable seat width?

Whatever is comfortable and profitable. I fit just fine in a coach seat and so do most normal Americans.

Where a slightly larger than average person can sit comfortably. If the seats are suitable for over 95% of the world population it should be good enough.

They tried, but the forklift broke.

By container ship then perhaps...

how bout we let the market decide? (note, this is canada not the US) If the airline thinks they can get more business by widening the seats, then they will. If the seats are too small people will fly other airlines. Giving fat people a buy one get one free is stupid, and fat people are not a protected class anyway.

Just let them walk (waggle) or swim instead. By the time they have reached their destination they'll have lost enough weight to be allowed to fly back :D

Only a fat person could say that. And only a retarded fat person at that.

Sounds like bullshit to me. A free seat for being a fat ass? Oh well, whatever. Whether or not they pay for the extra seat, at least I, as a normal sized human being, wont have to be squished into half a seat because the fatty next to me needs 1.5 seats. If it were up to me, Fatty McFatass would be paying for two seats. On the upside, he'd also be eligible for two meals so... win/win.

Also: how much of being morbidly obese is genetic? I mean, I eat large quantities of unhealthy food and live a pretty sedentary lifestyle, but I seriously doubt I'd ever become morbidly obese. Some pudge around the waist and then a heart attack at 45 to be sure, but I could never balloon to 300+ lbs. I really think these people are just wired to be ZOMG XBOX HUEG and when I think of it that way, it's really not fair to blame them for being what they are.

They can charge you for each 6 inches of space if they want. If you don't like, then don't fly.

Most airlines coach seats are around 17".
If your ass is 34 inches wide, you need more than 2 seats.

Screw comfort. I'm 6'6", 245. I'm not going to be comfortable anywhere. I however pay a regular ticket price and fit in one seat.

So few people are that size that it won't really change anything. So I don't see what the controversy is about.

Reasonable seat width = capable of holding a 6' 200 lb male.

If you're taller than that, that's unfortunate; it doesn't make sense to add legroom to accommodate a small percentage of people. If you're fatter than that, buy a second seat or be uncomfortable (but please keep your rolls within the confines of your seat.

If you have a medical condition that makes you morbidly obese, that's a different story.

Sometimes I'll luck out and get an emergency row seat because they see that I'm tall.

To Hell with "Principles" in this case. Some things are too minor to make big issues out of.
