I was reading the US jet thread here, and was wondering if anyone knows why the Canadian airforce chose F-18's as our fighter. That's all we have as far as i know, about 100 f-18's to protect the whole country. man i feel safe! why not f-16's?

CF18 Hornets are very multi purpose. They can be adapted to be used for many jobs. Also, of those 100F18's we have, about 20 are operational right now.

Not to worry. We will kick the ass of any country stupid enough to attack our northern buddies.

The F-18 is like a Ford truck. It is not the best, but it is not the worst, it is just an average truck... er, fighter.

isn't the f-16 a more cost effective plane? wouldn't it have been better to buy 50 f-18's for their multitasking, and a few f-16's for the fighter role?

That made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

But seriously, our safety (Canada) is in the best interest of the USA.
The USA will always protect us to the bitter end, because we happen to share the worlds largest un-patrolled border. If Canada was taken, the States would obviously be invaded pretty quickly.

I won't feel as safe however when your Air Defense System shoots down missiles over us, though. ;)

Canada really does need much of an Air Force because they rely on US protection.

well, in the event of an actual war with north america as a target, im sure we would get annexed quite quickly, so the idea of a canadian military is somewhat null anyway. but i was just wondering..

oh..
and how can our dinky airforce beat everyone else at that william tell competition?

Why not something with greater range/speed? With air fighters stationed only in
Bagotville (north of Quebec city) and Cold Lake (north of Edmonton) there are huge
areas of land within our country that our Air Force simply cannot defend. Even more
disturbing is the fact that our F-18s at full afterburner would take nearly an hour to
reach major cities such as Toronto and Vancouver if the need were to arise... such
as when that Air China plane needed to be escorted to YVR... and was, by the USAF
on 9-11.

the f-18 is one of the shortest range modern fighters, right? i really don't know what kind of dope our government is smoking some days.

for us to have any kind of chance to defend our huge territory from attack we would need like 95% of the population in our army, so basically we just have minimal forces for diplomatic/internal crisises and sutch.

If there's one time the US would not have any argument about going to war, it would be to defend Canada. It's as good as attacking New York (oh wait, we hem and haw about going to war over that, don't we?) Well, anyway, we've got your back.

Hmm, I don' think thats true.

I know for a fact that we have 3+ up at the Trenton Air Base. (55 min from where I live).

That is aprox 1.5 hours from Toronto by car. So, as the hornet flies... a few minutes?

All the same..

you couldn't attack TO w/o flying over quebec, the US or great expanses of northern canada, thus it really doesn't matter than most of our eastern force is in quebec. however it probably would be a good idea to have a small force in the maritimes to protect shipping, and vancouver island to protect the west... but i guess alaska comes half way down BC anyway, thus most of the west is the US's job anyway. but what about us here in the prairies, we're fvcked! i sure hope the americans have a few jets sitting in ND.

For the time being (since Sept.) they have moved a few F-18s to Trenton, however up
to that point it was military transport only (at least according to the CFB Trenton site).

All I saw at first was the words "Canadian" and "airforce" in the same sentence, I had a good chuckle...

So, to answer your question, I don't know.

I was told the same... I haven't seen them in the skies since Sept, but I know they are still there.

F18 may have been chosen by Canada because US manufacturer promised to partially build/buy parts for them from Canadian sources.
