A parent (who happened to be a newspaper columnist) failed to teach his son basic common sense about the internet. The result is that his family became one of several victims across the U.S. of a 16-year-old Canadian "swatter."

When the kid was recently caught, he wrote an interesting column about the harassment they received.

Personally, I think the kid's parents should be charged as accessories.

Teen Arrested for 30+ Swattings, Bomb Threats
A 16-year-old male from Ottawa, Canada has been arrested for allegedly making at least 30 fraudulent calls to emergency services across North America over the past few months. The false alarms — two of which targeted this reporter — involved calling in phony bomb threats and multiple attempts at “swatting” — a hoax in which the perpetrator spoofs a call about a hostage situation or other violent crime in progress in the hopes of tricking police into responding at a particular address with deadly force.
Same fellow swatted Brian Krebs twice.

Makes you wonder though.

Plenty of money to buy tanks and automatic weapons for 'Warrior Cops."

No money to authenticate 911 calls?

No way to keep kids from sending SWAT Teams to other peoples houses?

Since 9/11, the US has spent $791 Billion dollars on "Homeland Security." Still, the 911 system can still be cracked by 16 year olds?

And "Homeland Security" can't even protect us from Canadian Teenagers?

It's fairly trivial to spoof 911. Sign up for VoIP with a prepaid debit card and I can set my 911 address to be 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue if I wanted.

Dial 911 and it appears as though I'm calling from the Whitehouse and I even get sent to the appropriate PSAP.

You could blame the FCC if you want...they've been the ones pushing for "ease" in VoIP-based 911.

If I accessed the stuff over TOR or through proxies and used disposable email addresses, etc, it could be pretty freaking hard to track me down.

There isn't really a way to fix that, though, honestly.
