I know a passport is required to fly into the United States from Canada, but how about driving across the border? Will a birth certificate and drivers license suffice?

You can get the enhanced license, that will work for driving across border crossing.

At least in Ontario this is viable.

No it will not. Passport has been required for a few years now.

No it hasn't. I went to New York last year and my birth certificate was fine.

Seems I need an EDL. Hopefully I can get one in under 1.5 months.

Same in Washington. If you don't have the EDL a passport is now required. This is new as of 2008, IIRC.

The US of A needs to protect itself from the Canuckistanian terrerests!!

And Canada likewise feels threatened by own home grown turrurizers.

It's a mutual distrust as the documents to travel across that border are same as every other border in North America, regardless of country of origin.

I always wondered but how do they enforce this with people who have their own boats ? Hate the water and never been on a cruise or any boat in my life. Scared of it sinking.

Funny thing was, when I crossed into Ontario (at Niagara Falls) from NY, a couple weeks ago, we were interrogated more coming IN to Canada, then when we came back into NY the following day. All that the ICE dude wanted to know was whether we had any imports, and asked me to roll down the back window on his side, so he could see the passenger back there.

Guess the Canadians want to make sure we don't export any of our terrorists, eh?

Yep, that sure would have stopped 9/11. Oh wait, it actually would have done nothing. Oh well, at least the feds get some more money.
