Canada opens 36-hour season on seals

this'll be interesting. I'm interested to see how the international community (specifically PETA) will react to this.

I'm against the abusive and inhumane methods that have been historically used to do this type of hunting, not the hunting itself (so long as the number limits are strictly enforced).

NOTE: I did a search for "canada" and "seal" and turned up nothing. So sorry if it's a repost.

Probably to a shark, about the funniest thing there is is a wounded seal, trying to swim to shore, because WHERE DOES HE THINK HE'S GOING?!

BTW lots of places have to do this sort of thing to control numbers. Alabama has, and I'm sure other states too, had "open season" on various typically un-hunted areas to allow for minimizing deer populations.

Oh I know. I have no problem with this. Where I lived in Wisconsin our city had to hire snipers to reduce the deer population. It was an urban area and we couldn't trust just any Mr. "Joe Hunter" to not take out some kids by accident along with Bambi.

In the case of the seals there just aren't enough natural predators anymore (sharks, wolves, killer whales, etc...)

Interesting, the anti-seal clubbing community isn't didn't make any statements about the sustainability of it, they're only making a fuss about it being inhumane.

Anyway, a little OT but....
fishermen blame anything and everything they can when it comes to there not being as many fish in a given area anymore. The usual reason is because they overfished the damn place with their mile(s) long trollers (catching too many fish and sometimes destroying that fish's food source). It seems like every other month I read something about some group of Japanese fisherpeople going and taking out a big pod of dolphins or sea lions, or whatever because they would rather place the blame elsewhere than view the errors of theirs ways.

More emphasis needs to be placed on aquaculture.

Fishermen overpopulated that area, but cod stocks are not replenishing properly, and seals have a definite cause in that. I say whack em, but quickly. Shotgun to the head.

They club more seals now than they ever did in the heyday of the 70's
They just make sure they aren't the really cute white ones any more, they have to wait until they are all brown.
They also take a lot more of the meat now that they are bigger and use that too.
Though not all of them. .
Seals eat the same fish the Cod eat which is why Cod hasn't rebounded yet, but we do have a lot of seals
