Canada Invades New York City with Tim Hortons Coffee and Donuts

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Nothing revs the motor like a Monday morning cup of coffee.

"Well, New York is the world stage. We all know that. You get one chance to enter it. You're gonna enter it the best that you can," says Anne Pritt of Tim Hortons.

Pritt says the coffee and donut chain named for a Canadian hockey great is making its debut at a dozen Riese restaurant locations.

They're out to make an impression.

Kai Brinker, who works downtown and was passing through Penn Station, says it packs a punch.

I said to him, "You sound like a coffee guy."

He replied, "Oh yeah! Absolutely."

I asked, "Coffee's an everyday thing with you?"

Ha enswered, "Oh yeah - seven or eight cups a day."

I responded, "You're kidding me!"

He is reply to that was "No. Usually a much milder and weaker variety, more like the office cup."

That mid-morning office cup? Only for the truly desperate.

Customers started getting free coffee at the 34th Street and 7th Avenue location at 6am Monday.

NEW YORK -- There is about to be a doughnut war in New York.

Canadian institution Tim Hortons has announced that, as of Monday, it will open 12 outlets in Manhattan, marking the first excursion into the Big Apple for the company.

Dunkin Donuts can't be impressed, especially given the new Tim Hortons locations will be installed at spots formerly occupied by the American coffee and doughnut shop. As of Monday, hungry customers will be able to buy Timbits instead of Munchkins and sit on traditional brown Tim Hortons benches and chairs, in a beige restaurant decorated with green plants.

The 12 Tims will be primarily in Midtown, as well as two in Brooklyn. The busiest new location will likely be the Pennsylvania train station (34th Street).

In an effort to charm New Yorkers, a huge radio and newspaper marketing campaign is underway, with rebate coupons and other special offers circulating throughout the city.


"We're talking about coffee and doughnuts after all, so it has to be fun," said Joseph de Nardo, marketing director for Reise Organization, the company that recently bought the franchising rights in NYC and which already owns 113 restaurants in Manhattan.

Tomorrow, there will be free coffee all day at Penn Station and a news conference to mark the opening of the new Tim Hortons locations.

Tim Hortons already has 527 locations in the United States, including Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, Kentucky and Maine and western New York.

Tim Hortons will face some serious coffee competition in the big city, going up against places like McDonalds, Starbucks and, most recently, Krispy Kreme. And, of course, there are street vendors. Around Times Square alone, there are more than 38 Dunkin Donuts.

So how will Tims fare in New York?

"We sell more than just doughnuts," said de Nardo. "We have a full kitchen, so we can sell food all day and not only in the morning. New York likes change. In Canada, Tim Hortons is a religion, so I don't see why it can't be the same kind of situation here."

Tim Hortons is one of the fastest-growing restaurant chains in the U.S., says Harry Balzer, vice-president of the NDP Group, which studies U.S. eating habits.

It's really sad that Tim Hortons has become such a vital part of Canadian national culture and identity. People shouldn't perceive their own identities as belonging to a corporation. It's like someone tying themselves to McDonald's or KFC.

I like DD. Decent coffee and donuts, and cheaper than Starbucks. Buy coffee from them at least 3 times a week.

EDIT: Read the article. I'll try stopping by the Horton's at Penn Station on Wednesday, see if they are good.
