Canada Custom??

If I order a brand new camera in US and ship it to Canada will I be charged insane custom fee?

Also can I avoid it by marking the package as gift? Thanks.

Don't ship fedex. They tried to get me for $$ from Xmas gifts from my parents in Canada. Chances are you will get charged brokerage fees and GST.

As far as a gift goes, I don't know. But UPS charges INSANE border prices! Avoid at all costs.

I once bought a $190 CDN hard drive, got tagged for $58 CDN at the border.

Depending on the value, you'll have to pay the GST, PST, and a customs handling fee (Brokerage fee).

If you label the shipment as a "Gift" with a value of less than $50.00 you won't be charged anything.

If you're buying it from a merchant, they will not mark it as a gift. If you have a friend buy it and ship it, they can mark it as a low priced gift, say $50, but if the package gets damaged or lost, you can only collect insurance for the amount that was declared (assuming any insurance was purchased at all).

By USPS or UPS? I am kind of confused.

I'm not sure but, if you get the shipment via USPS you may not have to pay the customs handling fee. However, if you get the shipment via UPS, FedEx or any other courier you WILL have to pay a handling fee.

The problem is, when the object is a 'gift' you lose all insurance on said package, as well as loss of shipment, etc. You're gambling.
Duty sucks. It is determined in many different ways, and there is no way to guesstimate the fees. They consider everything from where the product was made, to where the materials for the product were made, etc. Evil duty...
