Canada Bans Coverage of Returning War Dead

soldiers killed in Afghanistan, angering political opponents and some families.

The government also has stopped lowering flags to half-staff outside Parliament each time a Canadian soldier is killed, prompting Liberals to accuse Prime Minister Stephen Harper of trying to play down the growing human cost of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.

Fifteen Canadians have been killed, including Cpl. Matthew Dinning, Bombardier Myles Mansell, Cpl. Randy Payne and Lt. William Turner, who were slain in a roadside bomb blast Saturday in southern Afghanistan in the deadliest attack against Canadian forces since they deployed to Afghanistan in 2002.

The media learned Monday that they would be barred from the evening ceremony, a move that mirrors Bush administration policy blocking media coverage of the coffins of slain service members arriving in the United States.

Like the Pentagon, Canadian Defense Minister Gordon O'Connor cited privacy concerns as a reason for the media ban,

It will be interesting to see if this kind of cr*p is allowed in Canada. It looks like neo-cons are spreading outside the US.

There was a scandal that got burried quickly of where did Harper get the money for his campaign ect. Alot of people speculated right wingers from the states, but they could not prove it (as it is illegal to get political donations from outside sources). Either way, most people in Canada who are politically savy (the few of us) see Harper as a mini Bush. Not the same power, but the same ideals.

Agree with you here. Same ideals and same religious motivations but I don't think Harper's going to admit speaking with God anytime soon.

No... :p

Another odd thing was all the right wingers who came here to help Harper on his campaign, the same ones who help the republicans during there elections. They disapered right after the election was done.

I've been saying that for years.

I'd like for Canada to be annexed into the U.S. anyway.

They need to suffer as bad as we are here.

Same goes for Mexico.

Over my dead body.

Never been a fan of Harper and this certainly doesn't help me become one. One of the criticisms against him has always been he was too Bush-like, surprise surprise!

What did you expect? He hasn't really made a secret of his political leanings. Aside from all the "hidden agenda" talk before the elections, we all knew what to expect.

I expected pretty much this. Which is why I voted Liberal. Kinda hoped he'd prove me wrong after being elected though. I'm ready for another Election anytime now.

Well, in the meantime, you can expect more dead bodies and growing anger and frustration among the Canadian public ... more fuel for the opposition, more material for Peter Mansbridge.

Considering Steven Harper campaigned on the ideals of patriotism and morality, I'm pretty pissed.

Emersen and now this?

I'm happy I didn't vote for him.

Atleast the liberals took 20 years to start screwing with a good thing.

This was just the begining and this is just a minority government.

Could you imagine what they would do if they had the majority? Not that the Liberals were a whole lot better.
